I loved this book. The title intrigued me but with a new author you never know, especially with no ratings. The book grabbed me right from the beginning and never let go. It is very well written. It is funny, interesting, quirky, just an overall good experience. If you want to go on a road adventure through the back roads of America and into local peoples homes and lives try this book. I do not think you will be disappointed.
I loved this book. The title intrigued me instantly so I gave it a try. I was never disappointed throughout the book. The story is about an African game preserve and the ongoing adventures of the staff and their animals and neighbors. The central focus is the increasingly intimate and loving relationship of Lawrence with his small herd of elephants.
As you can see by the host of positive reviews this book is a winner.
I like historical non-fiction so when this was offered for free I gave it a listen. I'm glad I did not have to pay for it because it is short and an average or less listen. I would not recommend this book unless you are very interested in this genre.
I buy many of my books because of the reviews and this is why I bought Manhunt. The reviews were very good so my expectations were very high. I enjoyed the book but was actually disappointed a little. It was interesting but did not live up to the five star reviews.
I would actually give it a 3.5 to 3.7 as it is better than average but certainly not a 5 star book.
This was a great story and a good performance. It was worth the price even if (perhaps?) it was fiction or partially so. About half way through I started to doubt the authenticity of Ken's friends and experiences. How could one person from such a humble background so quickly and miraculously transform himself into a world class art forger in so many genres. How could such an average guy be befriended by so many extraordinary characters? How could such a guy be serially surrounded by world class women and models? Then I thought, so what... just enjoy the ride. So I relaxed and did just that and I think you will too.
Teddy Roosevelt was like so many of our Presidents, they do not allow the Constitution to get in the way of what they want to do. He did a lot of good but was a socialist at heart. He was a larger than life person and lived an extraordinary life. The story was well researched and adequately read. I am now off to finish the trilogy.
I think Katie Davis gives us a good example of what a true Christian is like. She is giving her life in service to others less fortunate than herself... and she truly enjoys and loves doing it. I believe these are the kinds of people that will be in Heaven.
When I read the reviews for this book they were all so gushing that I almost couldn't believe they were true. So, I listened to this book and it truly is outstanding. The story line compares with Unbroken in that there is one amazing event happening to Simon after another. How can one man live through even one of these things let alone go through years of them? The main character is a true hero. This makes the overall book a positive and uplifting experience. You get both sides of the picture in that the Native American side is told through Tecumseh's perspective and the settler's side is told through Simon Kenton. The narrator is one of the best I have heard. He pronounces the words properly and inflects appropriately and consistently based on the changing characters. This is early American history at its very best. I am anxiously looking forward to more from both the author Allan Eckert and his narrator Kevin Foley. Thank you gentlemen for a great work.
2.0 was an update to 1.0 but I'm not sure it was worth it.
A little more time should have passed to make it more relevant.
This was a better than average, but not a great listen. The basic premise was intriguing but the story failed to deliver in the details. Overall though, I'm glad I bought the book.
