  • The Bone Bed: Scarpetta, Book 20

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 53 mins)
    • By Patricia Cornwell
    • Narrated By Kate Reading
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

A woman has vanished while digging a dinosaur bone bed in the remote wilderness of Canada. Somehow, the only evidence has made its way to the inbox of Chief Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta, over 2,000 miles away, in Boston. She has no idea why. But as events unfold with alarming speed, Scarpetta begins to suspect that the paleontologist's disappearance is connected to a series of crimes - much closer to home: a gruesome murder, inexplicable tortures, and trace evidence from the last living creatures of the dinosaur age.

    G. House Sr. says: "A tedious disappointment - Don't Bother!"
"Probably my least favorive Patricia Cornwell book"
What would have made The Bone Bed better?

What would have made the Bone Bed better? A better narrator would have been a good start but would not have saved the lazy effort put forth on the story. Kate Reading provided a barely acceptable Scarpetta, but her reading of the other characters was awful. As for the story, Cornwell once again drones on about past and personal details, yet gives the reader little to go on as far as "solving" the mystery. In the end a barely developed character steps in to provide us with the villian. I really miss the old Scarpetta.

What do you think your next listen will be?

    Mr. Penumbra's 24-hour Bookstore

What didn’t you like about Kate Reading’s performance?

Her voices for everyone but Scarpetta were terrible.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    Few, if any.

    Any additional comments?

This book won't cause me to abandon Cornwell. She has disappointed in the past with a few of the stories I felt were mailed in, but I know one day there will be another Post Mortem and it will be worth it.

  • Going Postal: Discworld #29

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 27 mins)
    • By Terry Pratchett
    • Narrated By Stephen Briggs

Arch-swindler Moist von Lipwig never believed his crimes were hanging offenses, until he found himself with a noose around his neck, dropping through a trap door, and falling into...a government job? Getting the moribund Postal Service up and running again, however, may be an impossible task. Worse, the new Postmaster could swear the mail is talking to him.

Robert W says: "Finally on AUDIBLE!!!"
    "My first Terry Pratchett listen"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Who was your favorite character and why?

The entire cast of characters was a hoot.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I enjoyed Pratchett's sense of humor throught the entire book. After listening to a couple serious books in a row, this was just the perfect balance of Sci-Fi and humor that I needed.

    Any additional comments?

The performance is very very good and entertaining. I will definitely be checking out some more Discworld titles.

  • Medium Raw: A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs)
    • By Anthony Bourdain
    • Narrated By Anthony Bourdain
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In the 10 years since his classic Kitchen Confidential first alerted us to the idiosyncrasies and lurking perils of eating out, much has changed for the subculture of chefs and cooks, for the restaurant business and for Anthony Bourdain. Medium Raw explores those changes, tracking Bourdain's strange and unexpected voyage from journeyman cook to globe-traveling professional eater and drinker, and even to fatherhood. Bourdain takes no prisoners as he dissects what he's seen.

Andy says: "entertaining but not as good as kitchen conf."

Not only can this guy cook, he can write and narrate, as well. I did not have overly high expectations from this book, but I had just listened to 48 hours of "The Stand" and needed something from the other end of the audible spectrum. I could not have made a better choice. The writing is entertaining, witty, and informative on subjects I didn't even know I needed to know about. He comes off as very authentic, and his narration never, not even once, provided me with the opportunity to drift off and have to hit the - 30 rewind. If the word f--k offends you, you may want to pass on this one. While I found his generous smattering of profanity appropriate and funny, I do know people who would not.

  • Alas, Babylon

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 14 mins)
    • By Pat Frank
    • Narrated By Will Patton
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

This true modern masterpiece is built around the two fateful words that make up the title and herald the end - “Alas, Babylon.” When a nuclear holocaust ravages the United States, a thousand years of civilization are stripped away overnight, and tens of millions of people are killed instantly. But for one small town in Florida, miraculously spared, the struggle is just beginning, as men and women of all backgrounds join together to confront the darkness....

    Evelyn says: "Excellent listen"
    "I loved this book"

If you are concerned that the time period in which this book takes place might make it kind of dated, please don't let that stop you from downloading and missing out on a great book. While technology may have advanced since this time period, the story is as relevant and compelling today as ever. I never once found myself thinking that the story was dated. The narrator is first rate and kept me involved from the start. Alas Babylon is worth the credit and deserves to be on this list. After I listened to it I turned my wife on to it who is a post-apocolyptic junkie, she loved it.

  • Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 9 mins)
    • By Christopher McDougall
    • Narrated By Fred Sanders
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Why we think it’s a great listen: Want to join the “superhumans”? Luckily you don’t have to run to catch up with them, thanks to McDougall’s and Sanders’ inspiring (and motivating) journey through history, science, physiology, health, entertaining characters and unlikely friendships. Full of incredible characters, amazing athletic achievements, cutting-edge science, and, most of all, pure inspiration, Born to Run is an epic adventure.

Corey says: "Amazing read - even for non-runners"
    "Born to Run"

If you run you owe it to yourself to download this book. McDougall's account of The Greatest Ultra Race never seen and character profiles of those involved kept a smile on my face through several runs of my own. Through his eyes, you are given the chance to experience this race, and educated about ultra running enough along the way to appreciate every thing and everyone involved. The pacing of the book isn't fast, more like the pace of ultra race the author describes, but it is about perfect for this story. The second half of the book, takes a turn toward wonkiness as McDougall describes barefooting, nutrition, et all, but, when he finally returns to the story, the characters and the race, it makes for a very rewarding conclusion. I was very glad I found and listened to this book. On On.
