"unrelentingly grim"
Great concept, but so little humor, hope or redemption that it makes a tough listen.
"Great fun"
Not a sequel, and not Jane Austen - but so what. Fun story, great to visit back with the characters from Pride and Prejudice. Clever references to other Austen works. Not usually a big mystery fan, but this was a great listen.
"Not his best"
I usually love Pat Conroy, but this one is much tamer than previous books, and it dragged a bit. Characters are simplistic stereotypes drawn from the headlines. The magic of the low country does not shine through here.
"silly and fun"
a farce and a mystery all in one. Very fun for a driving listen
"Graceless"
Tedious to the end. Characters full of self-absorbed angst and not much else.
"just ok"
Implausible plot turns, but nicely moving story line. The characters are one-dimensional and the imagery a bit heavy-handed. I thought the narrator does a poor job of the main character's voice, and of the Seattle Parisian refugee whose accent is more New York German immigrant. This was rather distracting.
"good listen for a car ride"
Well-developed characters. Interesting story line without too much complexity. Narrator does a nice job with voices. Dakota character seems more like 10 than 13 (particularly for an only child growing up in NYC). This one is like a good friend telling you a long story during a long drive. Entertaining but not life-changing. Great way to pass the time.
"maudlin"
Tiresome. Trite. Dimestore philosophy and literary references that add nothing to story. A few cute scenes and characters wrapped around sentimental cliche.
"Entertaining but no surprises"
Light listen for that long car ride. Well-developed characters but a predictable plot and a little preachy on the thinly veiled space exploration political agenda. Interesting view into the aerospace industry and first person descriptions of space travel.
"go see the movie instead"
Listening to this makes you appreciate the great editing and screenwriting that went into making the movie great. Tedious and not funny.
