Detailed descriptions of optic cable crossing the Allegheny Mountains to gain nanoseconds and the edge one needs to game the system
The Russian from Goldman goes to prison for nothing while the greedy Gekkos that ran Goldman go free
Millions Made in Milliseconds
800 Billion wasn't enough - Wall Street still doesn't get it. Greed isn't good for anyone but Gordon Gekko, The Wolf of Wall Street or Goldman Sachs. There is little difference between Bernie Madoff and the unindicted greed merchants that are masters of a universe they are racing to destroy. At least the fictional Oliver Stone characters and the enhanced real protagonist of Martin Scorsese had some style the investment bankers have no redeeming qualities.
Perhaps - I typically listen to my audiobooks multiple times - but this one is fresh in my memory and the story is pretty simple
Elements of Watchers by Dean Koontz and WE3 by Grant Morrison have intelligent animals who's thoughts are expressed but Maggie is simply very intelligent and loyal with the benefit of being exceptionally well trained
Great job with vocalizing Maggie's thoughts
When Maggie bonded with Scott and was willing to take on the Sergeant head of the dog squad
Evil cops vs a very good dog - what's not to like. It's a good story with particularly evil cops bested by a couple of wounded beings who prevail well told and voice acted
Radiant Enlightening Wisdom
The evolution of Shallan Davar and Kaladin
Beautiful controlled intensity meshes well introspective thought
Syl the sprin returns to Kaladin
Another series that has me pining for the next installment too far in the future while being an excellent stand alone novel. I am completely captivated by the characters, the plot, the setting, the wisdom and philosophy. This is such a complete world with a rich history and a fascinating culture. It moves along with significant action and a magnificent quest. Wondrous creatures populate the shattered landscape and beings of light with the assistance of "sprin" (or the binding essence of emotions and properties of substances) work and battle to save their world.
This is a wonderful story well told and voice acted.
I have recommended it often in the past because of my affection for the concept and a strange sense of "aha" as if the story could be a reality
James Winston - because he's really the only one of two main characters who is male - and easy for me to empathize
This book has inspired me to write a very similar story of my own in preparation for the day an opportunity might be presented to do this in an afterlife.
A very general and obvious plot element below - but not a "spoiler" since it would be so unnatural to exclude it Anyone in a Replay would have to try to stop Lee Harvey O.
What would you do if you had a chance at a do over? You expire and come to consciousness in the afterlife clearing house where you can choose your own Heaven. So what would be heaven to you? Mine would be the opportunity to relive my life with full knowledge of my past life. I could certainly do a much better job than Jeff Winston did with his lives. His lame attempts to change the JFK assassination was not well conceived along with his predictable wasted replay in captivity by the CIA. I'm sure I could find a much more effective way to stop certain assassinations - and possibly arrange some others. You would require a much more important goal - like saving the Earth from climate change but the steps you could take with unlimited wealth and the political power of knowing your opponents moves before they do would give you a great opportunity to make that happen. Stop Ted Bundy, Charles Manson, Tim McVeigh, Jim Jones, OJ and 9/11. Save JFK, RFK, MLK, Paul Wellstone, and John Lennon. Make certain Al Gore takes the office to which he was elected and that Ronald Reagan does not. Put every right wing Republican in thrall with Bernie Madoff and Bear Sterns while warning Speilberg, Bacon, Sedgewick, Malkovich and the Wiesels among others. Support candidates who agree to policies to decrease greenhouse gasses and weapon sales and who realize that the greatest redistribution of wealth in history has happened since 1980 with the wealth of the middle class redistributed to the wealthiest 2% of Americans. There is so much that could be done to make the world a better place while moving to save the Earth as we know it.
Am I so alone in my inclination to wish to make the world a better place? Jeff Winston wasted his gift and spent way too much time wallowing in a weird self-pity instead of making new friendships while altering the course of history for the better. What would be a more rewarding heaven than living with a great purpose and the power to make significant strides in achieving it? I would happily take all the replays I could get.
Not worth disappointment - the only thing to disappoint is the "human" nature that might enjoy this sickness - 20 naked UGA coeds kidnapped raped and tortured by terrorists - and then abused and "saved" by Ringo's sick stalker "hero".
that anyone would write this - I could only listen to the first 2 hours before being thoroughly disgusted with myself and taking two long hot showers.
That the reader could get the words out without gagging or laughing out loud is worth 4 STARS.
it exposes a pretty clear indication about the mental condition of those who might like this
If you enjoy nipples being scorched by a blowtorch and idiotic Limbaughtomized hatred of anything "Liberal" this is a great way to spend your money. Moronic comments about college coeds and Europeans in an absurdly unbelievable fiction of Conservative Macho sadism makes this a black comedy of a "B" novel. I'm surprised my MP3 player didn't melt from embarrassment. Ringo must be a real source of pleasure for 13 year old perverts.
a delicious addiction continues
NImue Becomes Two
When Nimue becomes two
That there is absolutely nothing to dislike. Wyman does the job extremely well and his narration never detracts from the story
A real answer: Nimue Becomes Two - Imagine being both a male and female version of yourself at the same time.
A more tongue in cheek answer: Wild Horses Couldn't Drag Me Away - explanation: Weber has more "snorting" and "nostrils flaring" than you could possibly imagine. Enough that I now tell my cat the horses are back every time he uses those descriptors.
I'm captivated enough by this series to have now listened to the entire first 6 books a third time in anticipation of this last installment. The deliciously agonizing slow pace of the books and the interminable length of time between them causes my mind to wander and lose place so I miss enough to make a second and third listen worthwhile.
Given the content, the maps provided online are woefully insufficient for following the geography of the action. This needs to be fixed - more art and detail would be a very welcomed addition. We have to imagine an entire world and the locations are important enough to make a detailed map a necessity.
After waiting 2 years for book 7 I downloaded it the first day and have gone through it over 48 hours. I have to keep reminding myself "it's the journey not the destination" when my natural impatience moves me to wish for a faster pace. So a quicker/less deliberate listen can be followed by a slower repeat listen. It works well for me.
My only quibbles are the 'snorting" and "nostrils flaring" and Nimue/Merlin's absurd self blame for starting the war she/he never started. That's precious little for almost 200 hours of audible book reading.
The politics and religion of Safehold through the eyes of a futuristic PICA from the distant past with 'magical' powers born of a massive technical advantage makes for a compelling story. I can't wait for the next installment but I know I have to - and I am not anxious for the story to end - at least not long before I do. And at this pace it may be a close race.
This is a masterpiece of TERRIBLE by a writer with all the sensibilities of a boy with diminished capacity. Amazing that something this bad could find a publisher. The writer must have a family connection to the owners because no one would pay the cost of recording something like this
The action scenes? In the middle of a bizarre attack by a Jihadist in a Venetian Palace during a costume ball held by the leader of the Jihad the protagonist is asked by his friend "how's it hanging"? A Jihad out of a Venitian Palace using autistic children with brain implants? Are you serious?
The dialog is so dimwitted and absurd the only reason to continue is to discover if the writing can possibly get worse. A story that makes no sense whatever A plot - if you can call it a plot - that strains - no breaks through any semblance of credibility. Characters you could never dream up who sound like escapes from a remedial reading class.
I would never imagine that Audible could possibly have something it the catalog as lame as this thing. Note a couple of the reviewers have only review the two books by this author so the rating has been fixed. Don't even think about buying this JUNK. I'm truly ashamed at myself for being sucked in by a review that is much more worthwhile than the mess it represents. This is TRASH.
I am a 60 something who probably shouldn't enjoy these computer game books as much as I do. But this genre has grown on me since William Gibson and Neal Stephenson became a part of my reading pleasure. This is a compelling love story with a lot of action and a great fight between some likable geeks and a nasty corporate entity. Well worth the credit and the time it took to listen - 2 days - because I could not turn it off once I got into it. Buy it and you should like it.
This one is great fun and could only be improve by targeting Murdock & the Koch Brothers or a crew of Wall Street financial officers for real. John Rain is eliminating the real enemies of the American people for a change and does it with flair.
Having read this series long ago I was pleased to renew an acquaintance with an old love. This is a great series and this first book is performed flawlessly. The tale of science fiction that improves with age is rare. A wonderful book with a great narration.
