Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don't live to see the morning? In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by 12 outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

    Overall

This series of books is so original, interesting and fascinating. It took me a little bit of time to get used to a female narrator, but after about 1/2 of the first book, I didn't even notice a difference any more. Carolyn McCormick is an excellent narrator. These books are not for younger aged readers even though they are Young Adult literature. I would say a mature 10 year old would be able to handle them, but probably closer to 12 is a good age. I would put them along the lines of the last 2 Harry Potter books for reader level.

These books will be re-read and dissected by the young adult literature community, just as the Harry Potter series has been. They are excellently written, with beautiful undertones and themes. Katniss is not a likeable character, but you like her anyway. She is tough, but not "boyish"; non-emotional but not insensitive.

If you are reading these reviews to see if you want to read these books, be prepared. You will be signing up not just for this book, but for all 3. Once you read the Hunger Games, you will HAVE to read Catching Fire and Mockingjay!

In the spring of 1974, Calliope Stephanides, a student at a girls' school in Grosse Pointe, finds herself drawn to a chain-smoking, strawberry-blonde classmate with a gift for acting. The passion that furtively develops between them - along with Callie's failure to develop physically - leads Callie to suspect that she is not like other girls. In fact, she is not really a girl at all.

    Overall

This book is more about the history of an immigrant family than it is about an intersex person. I expected to learn more about Cal's transition. However, growing up outside of Detroit, I found the references to real places very interesting. As long as you got into this book with a good expectation that it will be a generational family story, not an individual personal growth/coming out/coming of age story, then you will enjoy it very much.
