I really enjoyed the many characters and couldn't wait to see what happens to the Joads next. This is definitely well worth the listen!
I tried to give this a try. The premise of the book is interesting. And actually the reader is good at what she is doing- talking scared an anxious, but it is annoying. It is a whiny read that makes me feel like I'm listening to a book that has been dipped in an energy drink. With listening time to a premium, I really don't want to listen to hours of every second on the verge of disaster and being frantic. Waa. Waa. Waa. That is close to the preview of what you will hear. Listen to the sample first.
I loved the characters in this book.It is written with such a clever wit, but the voices really draw you into the story. This is about a boy Oscar, whose father died in 9/11. It doesn't focus on the sadness but on the relationships that link to his father. I felt I could not miss one single part of this book. The kid is very quirky all loaded with dreams, fears and love. I would recommend this. Make sure you can really listen to the first of the book and you will be drawn in as well. So Good!
First, there isn't much action in this book. But is is really well written. The story really focuses on the detective and his acquiring facts to solve the case. Galbraith writes very descriptively so you can envision the space and it feels like you have been there for years. I really wish there would have been some action, but another book. It was worth the purchase and made for some good background story listening. I feel I could be doing something and not really lose context of the story. This book to me, felt like Galbraith was setting up the scene for more stories to come. All in all, pretty good story.
This is such a dreamy yet odd story. It is a strange reality and I would often wonder if it was a child imagination or an altered reality. The very best part of this book is listening to Gaiman voice reading. Wow! It is such a great part of the story. I liked this and it was definitely worth the purchase.I feel Gaiman's books have parts that I really want to contemplate. I would find myself pulled into his descriptions and thinking about them for awhile. I will listen to this book again. As for a recommend, I would buy this one. It is worth the story.
I thought this would be a stock hero hunting a killer story. It is actually pretty good. I had to keep listening to it all the way through! Thank goodness it isn't a long book because I wouldn't have been able to get anything done! I always hesitate to read thrillers because they are gory or get too much into the detective or cop detail, but Koontz has a good pace at building the story and seems to have a pretty good knowledge of a couple of areas. Be aware there are a couple of graphic parts if you are sensitive to that. The story is full of surprises all the way to the end. I have not listened to Koontz novel before and after this listen, would choose another of his books.
When this book first started, I thought,"a historical turn of the century'. It doesn't take long for the action to start and then you need to hold on. This was a great story, full of intrigue and suspense. You aren't quite sure of where it will take you. The hero, Matthew, is alone in his quest to find out the truth and uses his deduction skills to get to the bottom of some murders that happen in a creepy little town. This is a little like Sherlock Holmes meets deliverance. Great story and plan on some sleepless nights listening to this one!
I listened to this right after 'Speaks the Nightbird", which was an excellent book. 'Queen" is the continuation of the Hero from the first book. This story falls short, though. It starts out with possibilities of being a good story, but then slows down in the middle of the book. I didn't like the characters telling us how everything ties together. I wanted our hero to figure it out with his cunning, or to have the action uncover the plot. It is fine to listen to, but I would listen to some books in between the two. The performance is excellent. I would listen to it for that, but be prepared for lots of little plots varying from the main one.
My friend told me what a great story this is. I first hesitated wondering if it was another war story. But that is only a small portion of the story. The young woman, Jean, lives through such an ordeal as a prisoner, but this shapes her for the next part of her life. This was such a great surprise! It is a mix of adventure, love and determination that culminates in New Zealand. The action is well paced and you want to find out how it ends. I would definitely add this to your listening list.
A Storm of Swords is a fast paced roller coaster ride. This book is full of so many surprises that I kept thinking..... what just happened. Keep your rewind button handy on this read because you will be using it often! Storm will not disappoint. This is definitely in my list of best stories and I know I will listen again.
I really wanted this story to delve more into the characters. I think it went too long sometimes on the historical aspects without the characters being involved. I didn't connect to the story and kept waiting for something bigger to happen. It never did. It was a long book that kind of went nowhere. The performance was good, but don't expect too much from this over-hyped book.
