As opposing forces maneuver for the final titanic showdown, an army of barbaric wildlings arrives from the outermost line of civilization. In their vanguard is a horde of mythical Others, a supernatural army of the living dead whose animated corpses are unstoppable. As the future of the land hangs in the balance, no one will rest until the Seven Kingdoms have exploded in a veritable storm of swords.

A Storm of Swords is a fast paced roller coaster ride. This book is full of so many surprises that I kept thinking..... what just happened. Keep your rewind button handy on this read because you will be using it often! Storm will not disappoint. This is definitely in my list of best stories and I know I will listen again.

Eight hundred women and children begin a 1,200-mile journey on foot across Japanese-occupied Malaya. At journey’s end, only 30 will still be alive. This is the story of one woman, of her ordeal, and of how she was saved by the sacrifice of an Australian soldier. It is a story of rare individual courage in the face of certain death, and hope in the face of despair.

My friend told me what a great story this is. I first hesitated wondering if it was another war story. But that is only a small portion of the story. The young woman, Jean, lives through such an ordeal as a prisoner, but this shapes her for the next part of her life. This was such a great surprise! It is a mix of adventure, love and determination that culminates in New Zealand. The action is well paced and you want to find out how it ends. I would definitely add this to your listening list.

History has all but forgotten.... In the spring of 1708, an invading Jacobite fleet of French and Scottish soldiers nearly succeeded in landing the exiled James Stewart in Scotland to reclaim his crown. Now, Carrie McClelland hopes to turn that story into her next best-selling novel. Settling herself in the shadow of Slains Castle, she creates a heroine named for one of her own ancestors and starts to write. But then she discovers her novel is more fact than fiction....

    Story

I really wanted this story to delve more into the characters. I think it went too long sometimes on the historical aspects without the characters being involved. I didn't connect to the story and kept waiting for something bigger to happen. It never did. It was a long book that kind of went nowhere. The performance was good, but don't expect too much from this over-hyped book.

The setting is the Georgia wilderness, where the state's most remote white-water river awaits. In the thundering froth of that river, in its echoing stone canyons, four men on a canoe trip discover a freedom and exhilaration beyond compare. And then, in a moment of horror, the adventure turns into a struggle for survival as one man becomes a human hunter who is offered his own harrowing deliverance.

    Story

This was on my list to books to read in my lifetime. I have watched the movie and wondered if the book would be as good. It didn't disappoint. The story is gripping and very suspenseful to the very end. The story is of 4 men with somewhat hum drum lives that run into circumstances beyond what they had imagined for a weekend wilderness outing. Very good listen.

To the Lighthouse is Virginia Woolf’s arresting analysis of domestic family life, centering on the Ramseys and their visits to the Isle of Skye in Scotland in the early 1900s. Nicole Kidman (Moulin Rouge, Eyes Wide Shut), who won an Oscar for her portrayal of Woolf in the film adaptation of Michael Cunningham’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Hours, brings the impressionistic prose of this classic to vibrant life.

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, serving in the household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife. She may go out once a day to markets whose signs are now pictures because women are not allowed to read. She must pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, for in a time of declining birthrates her value lies in her fertility, and failure means exile to the dangerously polluted Colonies. Offred can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost even her own name....

This was on my 100 books to read in my lifetime and I didn't know what to expect with the story. It is an interesting tale about an alternate society. I was surprised how good the book was, but the reading was wonderful. Claire Danes did an exceptional narration and it is one I would listen to again.

At once naturalistic epic, captivity narrative, road novel, and transcendental gospel, Steinbeck’s, The Grapes of Wrath is perhaps the most American of American classics. Although it follows the movement of thousands of men and women and the transformation of an entire nation during the Dust Bowl migration of the 1930s, The Grapes of Wrath is also the story of one Oklahoma farm family, the Joads, who are forced to travel west to the promised land of California.

The season of gift-giving is here, and this year we've got something special for our members: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Yuletide whodunit "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle". In this holiday-themed short story, Sherlock Holmes and his trusty sidekick, Dr. Watson, follow the trail of a lost hat and a Christmas goose through the streets of London and into a rapidly expanding mystery.
