Joel Berger's charmed life is fast slipping away. Determined to father a child before he dies, Joel makes one desperate appeal to the women of his dinner group for help. Soon he is surrounded by a colorful cast of female characters, including his iron-willed yet oddly endearing mother, Sylvia. You'll laugh and cry along with the Bergers as the story of their patchwork family unfolds, taking some deliciously unexpected turns along the way.

Really enjoyed this audiobook. Although quite different than any book I have read/listened to, I found it quite pleasantly unique. The themes of love, tolerance, and acceptance are threaded through the story and begs the question "What makes a family?"~in the end religious, ethnic, and cultural differences are not what is important. Great characters (Sylvia being my favorite) and wonderful narration.

Of all the desperate women in German-occupied Paris, Gabriela Reyes is the least likely to scratch out her survival as a whore for a Gestapo agent. After fascists murdered her mother and brother and tortured her father in an insane asylum, she hates the Germans as much as she fears them. But when she discovers the man responsible for destroying her family, she decides to become his mistress to try to free her father and avenge her family.

WW2 story based in France during the German occupation. Gabrielle, a strong young woman, searching for her father who was taken by the Germans. Story started out a little slow but as it picked up, I was drawn in by the sacrifices and heroism of several of the characters in this horrible time in our history. All in all, I enjoyed listening very much as the narrator is just superb.

The career of Stefanie Powers is one of so many stage, screen, and television credits that her name alone recalls memories as varied as her roles-on screen and off. From movie roles including John Wayne's daughter in McLintock! and Lana Turner's rival in Love Has Many Faces, to being terrorized by Tallulah Bankhead in Die, Die My Darling and befriending a Volkswagen in Herbie Rides Again.

I enjoyed listening to this audiobook but would have liked more of Stephanie's story and a little less of William Holden (even though he was apparently "the love of her life"). The many stories of famous stars, producers, and directors was fascinating to me and the wonderful relationship between Stephanie and her Mother was so very heartwarming. Ms. Power's narration was just perfect.

Nellie Bly, born Elizabeth Jane Cochran on May 5, 1864, was an American journalist, author, and charity worker who received initial renown after writing a stinging expose of the mistreatment of the mentally ill while faking insanity and living undercover at a New York mental institution. At a time when women were just beginning to break into the field of journalism, the type of undercover investigative reporting undertaken by Bly set an important precedent, allowing her to successfully pioneer working in the male dominated field of newspaper writing.

    Story

Nelly Bly, a reporter, goes undercover as a "crazy" woman and is committed to a mental institution (where most, ultimately, spend the rest of their lives). It is a narrative of the treatment of the mentally ill (and some perfectly normal women) in the early 20th century. Frightening and disturbing~Nelly was a brave young woman.

The good news is that public defender Summer Neuwirth just won her first case, which involved a brutal rape and kidnapping. As Summer pursues her next case, this time to keep an innocent woman off death row, elements of that past--a mysterious case of childhood amnesia, her police officer father's involvement with a serial killer, a terrifying attack she survived just months earlier--entwine with her present legal work, her missing mother, and her rocky relationship with a private investigator, all of which culminate in a thrilling trial... and terror.

Former piano prodigy Nastya Kashnikov wants two things: to get through high school without anyone learning about her past and to make the boy who took everything from her - her identity, her spirit, her will to live - pay. Josh Bennett’s story is no secret: Every person he loves has been taken from his life until, at 17 years old, there is no one left. Now all he wants is be left alone and people allow it because when your name is synonymous with death, everyone tends to give you your space.

Justin and Libby Denbe have the kind of life you’d find in the pages of a glossy magazine: A beautiful 14-year-old daughter. A gorgeous brownstone on a tree-lined street in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood. A great marriage, admired by all. A perfect life. When investigator Tessa Leone arrives at the crime scene in the foyer of the Denbes’ home, she finds scuff marks on the floor and a million tiny pieces of bright green Taser confetti. The family appears to have been abducted.
