Lalu Nathoy's father called his thirteen-year-old daughter his treasure, his "thousand pieces of gold," yet when famine strikes northern China in 1871, he is forced to sell her. Polly, as Lalu is later called, is sold to a brothel, sold again to a slave merchant bound for America, auctioned to a saloonkeeper, and offered as a prize in a poker game. This biographical novel is the extraordinary story of one woman's fight for independence and dignity in the American West.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

This book is way down my list of books to recommend. It touches on an interesting aspect of history, but it didn't wow me. It was one that I put down several times before making it to the end.

How could the performance have been better?

I'm not sure if it is the writing or the reading that makes this book seem so simple. Practically bangs you up side with the head with "the message" again and again and again.

Still love Pern, good for nostalgia, but not the same quality as his mother.

  • Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal

Best-selling author Mary Roach returns with a new adventure to the invisible realm we carry around inside. Roach takes us down the hatch on an unforgettable tour. The alimentary canal is classic Mary Roach terrain: The questions explored in Gulp are as taboo, in their way, as the cadavers in Stiff and every bit as surreal as the universe of zero gravity explored in Packing for Mars. Why is crunchy food so appealing? Why is it so hard to find words for flavors and smells? Why doesn’t the stomach digest itself? How much can you eat before your stomach bursts?

Would you listen to Gulp again? Why?

This is definitely going on the "listen again" list, Mary Roach packs so much information into her books that you can never digest (forgive me) it all in one go.

What did you like best about this story?

Roach isn't squeamish about tackling the less glorious topics, she looks into the angles that I want to know about, but am too afraid to ask.

    Any additional comments?

If you are inquisitive, any of Roaches works are worth a listen!

    Any additional comments?

Jeffrey Archer is one of my all time favorite storytellers, I have yet to find a book of his that I did not like. In true Archer fashion he hooks you in the beginning and leaves you hanging in the end, dying for the next book to come out!

She’s only recently learned that she is the Ruby, the final member of the time-traveling Circle of Twelve, and since then nothing has been going right. She suspects the founder of the Circle, Count Saint-German, is up to something nefarious, but nobody will believe her. And, she’s just learned that her charming time-traveling partner, Gideon, has probably been using her all along.

Here is the story of two families, branches of the Solomons, transported to an alien land. Both branches eventually grow rich and powerful. This novel is also the story of Australia, from its beginnings to its coming of age as a nation.

Would you consider the audio edition of Solomon's Song to be better than the print version?

Humphrey Bower's voice definitely adds to the piece.

What did you like best about this story?

I always appreciate Courtenay's attention to detail - you can see, hear, and even smell his stories.

What about Humphrey Bower’s performance did you like?

He did a nice job with a range of characters giving each a distinct personality.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I will admit to walking around with headphones in during every spare moment for several days to the great annoyance of others around me during this one.

    Any additional comments?

Well written and performed, but it left me feeling like the story was unfinished.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Making it less repetitive would be a step in the right direction. I felt as though the author was hitting the reader over the head repeatedly with the plot line so as to be sure the reader "got it" - it was loud and clear.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I learned about Loki's daughters (approximately 30 seconds worth of material), which was interesting.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Erin Jones?

    Possibly in a different genre.

Could you see Laiden's Daughter being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Please spare us, or at least relegate it to daytime TV.

    Any additional comments?

A polite way to describe this piece would be "light.". I was trying to escape a stressful setting for a few minutes every day while I was listening, and it was great for that. Would I recommend it to a friend, no. Would I listen to it again, no. Am I glad I got it for under $5, yes - paying more would be a crime.
