One of my all-time favorite books. I love the continual twists right to the end!
This is definitely going on the "listen again" list, Mary Roach packs so much information into her books that you can never digest (forgive me) it all in one go.
Roach isn't squeamish about tackling the less glorious topics, she looks into the angles that I want to know about, but am too afraid to ask.
If you are inquisitive, any of Roaches works are worth a listen!
Another Archer Success
Jeffrey Archer is one of my all time favorite storytellers, I have yet to find a book of his that I did not like. In true Archer fashion he hooks you in the beginning and leaves you hanging in the end, dying for the next book to come out!
Yes, I got hooked on the series and bought this and the third book as soon as I finished the first one.
I have to admit that this series was a bit of a guilty pleasure - I felt a little ashamed to be listening to a teeny-bopper romance at my age, but I couldn't resist.
Humphrey Bower's voice definitely adds to the piece.
I always appreciate Courtenay's attention to detail - you can see, hear, and even smell his stories.
He did a nice job with a range of characters giving each a distinct personality.
I will admit to walking around with headphones in during every spare moment for several days to the great annoyance of others around me during this one.
Well written and performed, but it left me feeling like the story was unfinished.
Making it less repetitive would be a step in the right direction. I felt as though the author was hitting the reader over the head repeatedly with the plot line so as to be sure the reader "got it" - it was loud and clear.
I learned about Loki's daughters (approximately 30 seconds worth of material), which was interesting.
Possibly in a different genre.
Please spare us, or at least relegate it to daytime TV.
A polite way to describe this piece would be "light.". I was trying to escape a stressful setting for a few minutes every day while I was listening, and it was great for that. Would I recommend it to a friend, no. Would I listen to it again, no. Am I glad I got it for under $5, yes - paying more would be a crime.
No thinking was required for this book at all.
The narrator was trying too hard. A native would cry at her accent.
I liked the premise of solving a ghost story, I thought it was interesting to see the setup through the eyes of a magazine working on the story and all the experts they called in; however, I was disappointed in the way the author resolved the story, I was expecting something a little more believable.
No, it wasn't believable in the end.
I am still debating. There were parts that provided me with some interesting material to ponder, but when I finished I felt very frustrated with the outcome.
This book brought my attention to an area of history that I was unaware of before.
Anticlimactic, but then it was based on reality, so a Hollywood ending wasn't expected.
At the right price, I could be convinced.
This book gave me a different perspective to consider, which I always think is worthwhile. Was it life-changing, no.
