On Jericho Phillips' floating brothel, sex slaves are forced to endure unspeakable acts. Now one such soul, 13-year-old Fig, is found with his throat cut, his tortured body tossed into the river. Commander William Monk of the River Police swears that Phillips will hang for this abomination. But the miscreant is as wily as he is monstrous, and his wealthy clients seem far beyond the reach of the law.

I have enjoyed many other Anne Perry stories, especially those read by Davina Porter. This one was marred by a terrible reading by David Colacci. I will make sure to stay away from any other books he narrates.

In this fast-paced story, a treacherous path from Scarpetta's past merges with the high tech highway she now finds herself on. We travel back to the beginning of her professional career, when she enlisted in the Air Force to pay off her medical school debt and found herself ensnared in a gruesome case of what seemed to be vicious, racially motivated hate crimes against two Americans in South Africa.

I used to love this series but I think this is the last one I'll read. What an ego Kay Scarpetta has developed. No matter what happens she's sure its about her in some way. And all she does is whine throughout the book. If I were Benton I'd go back into the witness protection program just to get away from Kay.

  • Passenger to Frankfurt

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 57 mins)

    Story

Sir Stafford Nye's journey home from Malaysia to London takes an unexpected twist in the passenger lounge at Frankfurt: a young woman confides in him that someone is trying to kill her. Their paths cross again and again, and each time the mystery woman is introduced as a different person. Equally at home in any guise in any society, she draws Sir Stafford into a game of political intrigue more dangerous than he could possibly imagine.

Dell says: "Love, love Agatha, but not this one."
    "Terrible, terrible, terrible"
    Overall

This is not the Agatha Christie I know and love. It is a post WWII "espionage thriller" written by someone who should have stuck with the good old who-done-it.

When Connon got back from the Rugby Club, his wife was even more uncommunicative than usual. The remains of the tea were in the kitchen, while she slumped in an armchair watching some variety show on TV. Connon had taken a nasty knock in his match. He went upstairs and passed out on the bed. Five hours later the TV was still on...and Connon noticd that the front of his wife's head had been caved in.

Reginald Hill is one of my favorite authors but this audio book was AWFUL. The problem was the narrator. I had a very hard time understanding him and also discerning one character from another. In the future I will stay away from anything read by Brian Glover.

  • Deadly Nightshade: A Martha's Vineyard Mystery

Martha's Vineyard has been home to Victoria Trumbull for most of her 92 years. Its magic, history, and picture-perfect calm are part of her very being. But one evening, Victoria hears something that doesn't quite belong: a scream followed by a splash and a sound of a car speeding away. She investigates and discovers a body on the outgoing tide.

It was almost painful to listen to this book. The story is only so-so but Davinia Porter's narration was dreadful. I'm usually a fan of hers but not this time. For a story taking place on Martha's Vineyard why does everyone have a strong English accent? Even the ex-NYC cop sounds like he took a detour through London. When she does vary the accent it's almost worse. A crusty New Englander with a Scottish accent.

    Stay away from this one.

When Inspector Banks of Yorkshire investigates whether an abusive husband might be guilty of an unsolved string of murders, his suspicions are aroused by the details of the man's marriage. Is the suspect's wife a victim or could she be his accomplice?

Giles T. Jackson says: "Great book!"
    "Ruined by the narrator"
    Overall

Aftermath is a good book but the narration by Ron Keith spoiled it for me. Most of the time he sounded like he had a head cold and his accents were terrible. A big disappointment.
