In a perilous future where disposable duplicate bodies fulfill every legal and illicit whim of their decadent masters, life is cheap. No one knows that better than Albert Morris, a brash investigator with a knack for trouble, who has sent his own duplicates into deadly peril more times than he cares to remember. But when Morris takes on a ring of bootleggers making illegal copies of a famous actress, he stumbles upon a secret so explosive it has incited open warfare on the streets of Dittotown.

He created a fascinating world, but the actual story isn't engaging enough. I finished it, but was never engaged, never had any trouble putting it down.

In 2007, the Center for Automation in Nanobiotech (CAN) outlined the hardware and software platform that would one day allow robots smaller than human cells to make medical diagnoses, conduct repairs, and even self-propagate. In the same year, a simple pill, it had been discovered, could wipe out the memory of any traumatic event. At almost the same moment in humanity's broad history, mankind had discovered the means for bringing about its utter downfall - and the ability to forget it ever happened.

Book one was very good; heartwarming and surprisingly action-packed. This book, however, was incredibly dull. It's all about backstory, but you would be better served reading the synopsis on Wikipedia.

When struggling riverboat captain Abner Marsh receives an offer of partnership from a wealthy aristocrat, he suspects something’s amiss. But when he meets the hauntingly pale, steely-eyed Joshua York, he is certain. For York doesn’t care that the icy winter of 1857 has wiped out all but one of Marsh’s dilapidated fleet. Nor does he care that he won’t earn back his investment in a decade. York has his own reasons for wanting to traverse the powerful Mississippi. And they are to be none of Marsh’s concern - no matter how bizarre, arbitrary, or capricious his actions may prove.

Not his best. Great premise, but contrived and not finished well. Doesn't seem like the author that wrote ASOIAF.

    Story

Predictable, with flat, cliche characters. I chose this book because I'm enjoying time travel books right now, and I've always heard good of Crichton. I was disappointed to find that time travel is merely the MacGuffin, that after an impressively scientific (and promising) time travel theory expounded at the beginning, it's essentially irrelevant. The narration was a bit forced, and over-baked.

Jane Austen is amazing, of course; her insight into people seems god-like. but Juliet Stevenson was the real surprise, she's just incredibly expressive.

The sphere is alien in origin, but has been controlled by Man for millennia. A legend as old as the stars rules this constructed world: when the seventh seventh seventh human Heptarch is crowned, he will be the Kristos and will bring eternal salvation...or the destruction of the cosmos.

I'm a big OSC fan and Emily Rankin is my favorite narrator, but this was not enjoyable. Pretty much all of his novels are somewhat didactic, but enjoyably so; Wyrms was overwhelmingly and overly didactic. The sexual theme was unnecessary and distasteful. 2 stars and not 1 because there were passages with his typical storytelling excellence.

Unfortunately, before he could finish reading the letter, he was stabbed to death.
