I didn't know this was part of a trilogy. I do not think I will buy the next two parts.
The Narrator was very good. I would listen to him again.
The story took me two weeks to listen to. For some reason, and maybe this is part of what the author wanted, I felt as though I was listening to this from a black hole of despair.
None of the characters were engaging, I didn't care about any of them nor do I care to see what happens to the remaining ones in the next book.
I love End of the World stories. I did not love or even like this one.
I'm sure I'll listen to this book a few more times over the years. Our planet is beautiful and scary. The human spirit is also beautiful and scary. I'm not sure we make men like this anymore.
I have not been a fan of Pendergast like some others, but this one knocks him back into the starting team lineup.
I am sure I'll listen to this one again because there were lots of fun details and characters.
It was also nice to see some of the characters "grow up" a bit.
Since I can't return it I guess I'll write to warn others away from this narrator. Or maybe it is the recording equipment. I'm 1.5 hours into this - I've started it over 3 times - and I'm not going to finish it. I might try the library for a borrowed version and see if I can actually finish the book.
Let me say that i'm a FAN of Castle - the t.v. show. This book started out good - I felt some of the same play as the show - but the recording and speaker are HORRIBLE. It's like he forgets to breathe so while he's reading he starts talking softer and softer before he runs out of steam - or the recording group is trying to keep your attention by making the sound go up and down.
Either way - NO - this was a bad pick on my part and I'm sorry because I bought two of these books.
From space, our planet is small. When in the forests, our planet is huge. Books and stories like this make me wonder just what secrets our small planet might still hold.
This is for all the Sci-Fi lovers and conspiracy theorists. The narrator starts off a little stiff on the first couple of pages and it had me worried. But soon he relaxed into the character, the character relaxed into the story and the story unfolded. And what a story it is - full of surprises, ideas, and good old fashioned science fiction.
I loved it and might just start it over in case I missed something.....
The narrator's voice was perfect for the characters. Very natural and you could hear the voice of a young woman in the middle of a series of life changing events.
This is a fun read, action, adventure, romance, bravery, courage, and a dark path. It is a perfect Young Adult story and that's what the writer went for. I found myself thinking about my high school days and wondering about the choices we make there and how they obviously were the same and yet differed from the choices made by these people.
I liked the scenes between Trish and her mother. A mother's love seems to be stronger than family in this book and I like it.
What I would have liked more was some more background on the education system in place before the kids all turned 16.
It's not the Hunger Games - thank goodness....
Lots of reviewers have been complaining about the lack of background, working science and small things like - who drives the train. Maybe these will become more relevant in the next book, but are not really a part of this story. If you are going to focus on this then skip it becuase that's not what THIS book is about.
Had this been a seasoned writer going for an adult audience the book would have been another 4 hours long and we would have had more background on the society, how it got this way, how social things worked, etc.
I found it to intrigue me enough to get the second one and I plan to enjoy that one too.
This was definately a fast paced book with action on every page. I think I would have liked the author to develop the past of the main character a little more. The character wrote a book about his past life but it wasn't enough to give you more depth.
I liked the narrator on this and don'e recall that I've listened to him before.
I suspect that whatever background the reader brings to the table while listening to this book will affect how you like the ending. Personally, I would have liked the main character killed off. The only character worth redeeming didn't last. But that's my view based on my preferences of the kind of people I call friend.
