  • Anne of Avonlea

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 39 mins)
    • By Lucy Maud Montgomery
    • Narrated By Shelly Frasier

In the first sequel to Anne of Green Gables, Lucy Montgomery's feisty red-headed heroine is now 16 and a school teacher in the small village of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island. Although older, she isn't necessarily wiser, and she hasn't outgrown her mischievous antics.

Joseph R says: "Enter the Red Headed Snippet"
    "Narration is great!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. Very wholesome relaxing uplifting read.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Anne of Avonlea?

Writing it here would spoil it for you

    Which scene was your favorite?

When she makes a friend after the wrong turn

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed several times. It made me smile a lot.

    Any additional comments?

I felt the need to review this because I almost didn't buy the Shelly Fraiser version after reading a couple of reviews here complaining about her voice, particularly with the children. Even with the seed planted I found nothing remotely irratating about her voices. Actually I thought they were quite good and allowed me to easily picture the child in my mind.

  • Steven Spielberg: A Biography

    • UNABRIDGED (20 hrs and 23 mins)
    • By Joseph McBride
    • Narrated By Edward Lewis

The most successful director in movie history, Steven Spielberg has been responsible for such box-office blockbusters as Jurassic Park, Jaws, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and the Indiana Jones trilogy. And yet throughout much of his career, Spielberg's work has been undervalued by critics who have questioned his emotional maturity and intellectual seriousness. It was not until he made Schindler's List in 1993 that he was widely recognized as a serious filmmaker.

Chelsea says: "Out of date but nevertheless interesting."
    "Unemotional Sequential Compilation of Events"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Tell more of a story instead of just reciting facts, opinions, and quotes.

What was most disappointing about Joseph McBride’s story?

It was written in a maddeningly unemotional style, seemingly content merely to educate rather than entertain.

Would you be willing to try another one of Edward Lewis’s performances?

Doubtful. He didn't have a lot to work with here but he only added to the mundane presentation of material.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It did educate me about things that occurred during Steven's life but not in an enjoyable way.

    Any additional comments?

Someone could easily take all of the material in this book and rewrite in a more colorful way that would make it much more entertaining.
