A scientific experiment begins, and as the button is pressed, the unexpected occurs: everyone in the world goes to sleep for a few moments while everyone's consciousness is catapulted more than twenty years into the future. At the end of those moments, when the world reawakens, all human life is transformed by foreknowledge.

I was looking forward to this book because I had found the TV series increasingly irritating. However, it was at least entertaining in its way, unlike Sawyer's novel which is terribly dreary with uninteresting two-dimensional characters and an excess of tedious dissertations on quantum physics. I really wanted to get this book behind me so that I could move on to something more enjoyable. Shades of Philip K Dick -- great idea, amateurishly written. The best bit is definitely the chase, which is quite gripping because you really don't know what's going to happen. On the other hand, you don't really care.

A man discovers an incredible talent for painting after a freak accident in which he loses an arm. He moves to a "new life" in Duma Key, off Florida's West Coast - a deserted strip, part beach, part weed-tangled reef, owned by a patroness of the arts whose twin sisters went missing in the 1920s. Here, Freemantle is inspired to paint the amazing sunsets. But soon the paintings become predictive, even dangerous.

What a pleasure it is when you come across a book like this. Characters you really care about, humanity and humour, tragedy and nightmare within a narrative which flows with huge confidence and power. In addition, it is superbly read. Although you might not want all of the things that happen to happen, you cannot deny the fact that this is a master at work.

It was January 2021, and Rick Deckard had a license to kill. Somewhere among the hordes of humans out there lurked several rogue androids. Deckard's assignment: find them and then..."retire" them. Trouble was, the androids all looked exactly like humans, and they didn't want to be found!

What was I thinking? Every time I read something by PKD I vow never to read him again. But then my memory is erased, and I repeat my mistake.
This is however by far the worst. So poorly written I actually found myself winding through certain sections. Scott Brick, normally an excellent reader, seems completely at sea as the author rambles hopelessly, producing badly-constructed sentences and revealing an utter ineptitude when it comes to character and plot.
The movies are always so much better than PKD's feeble scribble (e.g. Total Recall; Minority Report). I was hugely relieved when this dull experience was over.
