"One Night with the Laird," followed book 1, "the Lady and the Laird," and let me say, I was excited to get back into the social world of highlanders in the 1800's that Nicola Cornick created.
The romance between Lady Mairi MacLeod and Jack Rutherford starts off with a night of anonymous passion that proves to be searing in their ties to one another. Lady Mairi takes a chance and lures a gorgeous man from a masquerade ball to a small private home she owns to escape her present worries and lose herself in a night of passion with a stranger. Little did she know, that the man she ravages (or vise versa) is none other than Jack Rutherford, a relative of her sister's husband whom she loathes! Well, maybe "loathe" is too strong of a word. ---The man who she finds to be dangerously attractive and arrogant who she avoids at all costs. YEOW!
In book 1, Jack propositions Mairi to be his mistress and she sent him to hell as any decent widow would….LOL. However, the chemistry and draw that each of these two have with one another is inescapable. Jack, himself, is a total babe. He is charming, handsome, and a favorite among ladies, men and society, alike. The ladies love him for his sex appeal and men admire him for his fierce fighting abilities and business savvy.Yet, Mairi can't get away from him fast enough. After that night of destiny, she leaves him without a goodbye or proper identity, and the man goes wild trying to find her as he just can't get her out of his mind. So, when both characters meet in that moment of revelation, sparks fly and what can I say, their fate is sealed….pretty much!
This story is a great read because of the unfolding sexual appeal that blossoms into an unwavering love that melts alway the strong defense mechanisms that both characters erect. In this book, you will find adventure, steamy love (with some BDSM scenes that are like WHOA!!!--hot in here!), family interactions, deep family secrets, castles, society events, evil villains, but most of all a love that is healing and irrevocable. The end "danger" scene was so riveting and heart warming. Wow! What a man Jack is! I love how he rescued Mairi.
I gave this book 4 Stars instead of 5 for some missed opportunities…
#1-- When Jack & Mairi were already lovers and "betrothed," he asked her to ride off with him on his horse and even though she wanted to, Mairi held back and didn't.
#2--Also, in the green room (I think that's what it's called), Jack and Mairi take shelter from the storm and this could have been a perfect rendezvous, but instead it was awkward and stilted.
#3, NO EPILOGUE!!! Are you freaked kidding me???? I hate it when authors don't add epilogues to great love stories…it's so unfair!
As a reader, I thought those were missed opportunities, but it was evident that the author used these two experiences to showcase the fear that both Jack and Mairi still had to conquer before their inevitable HEA.
Overall, great book that I will re-visit from time to time. BTW, loved the book cover. Some book covers are so off and this one was very, very nice!
P.S. the narrator was great! I thought she did a wonderful job and complemented the story.
I could not, for the life of me, get the song "HERO" from Enrique Iglesias out of my mind while listening to this audiiobook. Mainly, this book is about a terrible injustice that was incurred on some very strong men in Special Forces who were serving their country in Afghanistan while being sabotaged and attacked as a part of a betrayal. Nick Rixey (2nd in command of that operation), is dealing with the loss and trauma of, not only his honor and military career, but also the lost lives of his brother/men who died in the attack. This story takes place about 1-year after the incident. So, while Nick is licking his wounds and partnering with his brother at his TAT business……Becca Merritt walks into his life, and well, it's not ever the same. (The right kind of woman can do that to a strong man, after all).
I felt that the redemptive qualities were so evident right away, and part of that quality is that beautiful Becca is the daughter of the military leader who sold out the force and left them to die. How ironic it is when innocent Becca appeals to Nick for help in finding her brother who is now MIA. Right in time, Nick assembles his old crew as they come together to join forces and not only save Becca's brother, but also uncover the truth behind their sabotage & ruin.
Through out the action and suspense in the book, it felt like the evil which lurked was tantamount to that in the City of Gotham (you know like in Batman) because the conspiracy and corruption infiltrates, what seems like, all the structures of authority. Although this book does not solve the overarching mystery…that is to be solved at the end of the series ( I would imagine). Yet, as these men fight to uncover the truth, in this book, loves pushes itself through in the fiery, passionate and beautiful love between Nick and Becca. Their chemistry was great and they complemented each other very well. I loved Becca's description of Nick's tattoo's and well, so glad they fit in time for a burgeoning romance in between the sleepless nights of worry and the days of strategizing while busting the riddle to their living nightmare.
In regard to the following book, I'm going to wait till I'm in the mood for a book where the first focus is solving a mystery, and the second is the romance. I tend to prefer books where the romance is front and center and drives the plot and action. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining because overall this book was very well done.
Narrator: I liked Seraphine Valentine, overall. I did need to get used to her slow pace, at times.
Wow! This book reminded me of the early take of Sex and the City where Carrie Bradshaw engages the audience, while pausing moments on screen to make her statements. This is the same style Andrew "Drew" Evans uses to tell his experiences and very entertaining story through his POV. But, where Carrie Bradshaw was honest and sweet about her pursuit of love, Drew Evans is honest and a D-bag about his pursuit of tail, and…nothing more..well, of course you can't leave out his numero 1, which is his career.
This book was very well done. It is a hilarious, fun, sexy read in between serious books. I had so many LOL moments, my stomach hurt. Drew is an investment banker who falls helplessly in love with a beautiful--more like gorgeous girl he meets in a nightclub who ends up being the new hire at his family's investment firm. So, what starts off as amazing chemistry and attraction, turns into competitive flair, and lastly into a hot, piercing love. Yes, love…the real thing.
The woman who turns this playboy's head and heart around, is the intelligent, driven, and very good-looking, Kate Brooks. Now, the banter, witty quips and side examples (as Drew engages his reader's audience directly) are just hilarious, and so smart, trendy and modern. The story is further enhanced by the involvement of Drew's awesome friends and family. OMG, the conversations between Drew and his niece are both funny and also endearing.
I can't give the details away because the plot is rather simple, but gets the work done. Basically, Drew uses women as sex objects, and why not??-- He's never had to work for the attentions of a woman in his life. He is a real dog, as in man-whore-dog, but he's also charming, cute and funny so he really grows on you. Yes, that's right, you can't help but love him and also kind of feel giddy when he gets what's coming to him. However, rest assured, this man works hard at winning over his lady-love and it all works out….in a very fun, sweet, incredible, sexy way.
My only issues was that it was over tooooo quick! And, I really don't like the F-word combined with Jesus Christ (it's just offensive). Otherwise, this is a fun, enjoyable, LOL read/listen.
Narrator: Sabastian York was in his element….sexy, smooth and at ease…loved his performance!
Emma Chase, PLEASE TELL US THERE IS A TANGLED VOLUME 2 OR SOMETHING…..throw us a bone here!
This is the first sci-fi, alien/human romance I have read…like ever. And, this series did not necessarily push me in the direction of other alien romances, but more so, it put Anna Zaires on my authors' radar list. She did a fantastic job in capturing the emotional and triumphant progress of such an interesting and unique romance as of that of Korum and Mia.
In this book, all loose ends, struggles and issues from previous books are brought forward and resolved in a fabulous manner. There is nothing that is left without a resolution and I really appreciated that in this series, and that is why I so loved this book.
Both Mia and Korum's relationship becomes even more grounded and catapults into an epic, legendary romance that really changed and moved both their societies and worlds, alike. Anna Zaires could have kept their story moving forward, but it's nice when an author knows when to stop as well.
In this book there are beautiful, sentimental moments between Korum and Mia. Mia's personality, gifts and worth push themselves to centerfold as she reaches new heights in her value and position in Krinar society. GO MIA!!! I was impressed at how Korum is represented as such a powerful lead. He never loses momentum, is rarely caught off guard, protects Mia at all costs, and is so intelligent that he's typically one step ahead of everyone else. There is nothing this man will not do for Mia. His love is insatiable, powerful, and gives a "forever" type of romance a whole new meaning. Both Mia and Korum's love will be added to my list of "favorites." I will regularly revisit this audiobook series…that's how much I really liked it.
Narrator: Emily Durante must have been good or at least decent because again…I was more focused on the details in this fantastic ending and not so much on the narration…I know weird, but what can I say??? Loved this series!!!
If you would make a list of your favorite Alpha Males….let's say, Highlanders, MC bikers, Military Men, FBI agents, I dunno maybe Inked-out tough guys….well, just put Korum the powerful Krinar at the top of that list. This is the second installment in the series and I really loved it.
I loved seeing the growth in the relationship between Mia and Korum. Korum is hot, intelligent and so romantic and tender with Mia, but the big problem is that well, he has taken her away from her life to be with him…no questions asked. This is not negotiable and it absolutely showcases Korum's domineering, possessive and territorial side when it comes to Mia. Mia is compelled into this alien/human relationship, yes by force, but also through….dare I say it…love.
The aspects that fascinated me in this book was how the reader is immersed in this Krinar society and it just gets more interesting along the wayt! Mia is taken to live with Korum in Lenkarda (one of the K's largest settlements on earth). Mia settles in and is finding her way through exposure to domestic technology (OMG!! Where can I get one of those "intelligent" homes??), advanced research in her field, Krinar political structure, and she gets to know other humans who are in a similar alien/human relationship, as her own. (By the way, I loved the Krinar wedding they attended).
Mia really comes alive in this book. She is stronger and even though she falls in love with Korum, she is not afraid to speak her mind and does communicate her struggle in their relationship where Korum has all of the power. I also loved the softening of Korum. We learn more about his thoughts, motivations, background and his irrevocable, passionate love for Mia. The loves making scenes are plentiful and are more emotionally connected as compared to the sex scenes in the first book (which were super hot as well). I think this is reflective of how their romance is deepening and growing. Their sex life is definitely off-the-hook, out-of-this-world type of amazing.
There is a suspenseful conspiracy that pushes the plot forward and is another exciting component. What I have mentioned is only the tip of the iceberg, there are so many wonderful details in this book that will leave you sitting back enjoying every riveting moment.
Narrator: Kitty Hendrix was fine as a narrator. I have to say that I didn't pay much attention as I was simply too immersed in the story itself. That's a good thing!!
Wow, first impressions can be tough!!! For Vanessa McGregor, beautiful red-head with the great body, quick wits and sharp instincts, she was immediately taken aback by her best friend's brother Jackson "Jax" Maris whom she had heard so much about. But, in their initial meeting at a Hawaiian airport, well Jax kind of blew it by responding in a blasé manner about his tardiness. And, this is one gal who is an attorney by career and feisty in personality that you don't want to mess around with!
Jackson is an MMA fighter who falls under the category of "swoon-worthy" with his interesting tattoos, charisma and good looks, but even his good looks couldn't get himself out of a ruined first impression. So Jax, inspired by the moment, concocts a fabulous, little plan to find his way up close and personal with Vanessa for a whole week! Whoa!!! And, what a week it turns out to be!
I enjoyed the banter, the chemistry, the great sex scenes and the sweet moments, alike. The background of both characters added an extra depth and dimension to the story. It was also so beautiful to see Reed and Luci together again, and experience their wedding! Whoa….lovely!!!
Overall, Jax and Vanessa's romance is marked by definite challenges because Vanessa is so closed off. Sometimes, I even felt like the work Jax put in to win her heart was tedious and exhausting, but, bless his persistent and introspective heart, Jax pushed through!! And, who doesn't love a persistent man???--Especially a hot MMA fighter.
With two strong, independent leads, I suppose their HEA was to be expected. It's not my favorite type, but it's an arrangement that has promise and is well on it's way toward "forever." I have to say, I LOVED the last part about Jax addition to his tattoo….so tear jerking!!!!
Narrator: At first I thought Holly Fielding was a little monotonous and bland, but then I got used to her and felt as though she added a nice feminine touch…..I'm trying to be positive here!!! :-)
It all started with a walk in the park…..but things on earth were different now. It had been about 5 years since earth was peacefully invaded by the Krinar alien species, an advanced race from another planet. So, for Mia Stalis, a college student at NYU, what else could she possibly derive from a simple, yet somewhat awkward run-in at the park with one of the "K's"….a beautiful specimen of man named Koram who eyed her like a predator and left her with unsettled feelings. Well, Mia wasn't far off from her first impression, what might have been considered an innocuous walk in the park become the beginning of a life, destiny and epic romance she couldn't have begun to fathom. And, I could not have begun to fathom what an awesome series I stumbled onto with the Krinar Chronicles!!!
Wow! This book was on fire with passion, strong themes of capture, inner-conflicts and racy twists and turns at every corner. This is considered to be a dark, erotic romance, and certainly the way Koram initiates and fosters a relationship with Mia evokes a balance of chills, dread, and excitement. Throughout this book you will feel Mia's visceral response to Koram and his maddening need for her, and vice versa. For the sensibilities of a 21st century reader, well some of the themes are downright creepy, but never far from exciting.
In this book, the intelligent, decisive, gorgeously-masculine, Korum is still somewhat of a mystery. We will learn more about him and his motivations/life in the next few books. I really liked Mia's responses and the way she dealt with her situation as I thought it was realistic and honest. She's one of those sweet girls who is not aware of her attractiveness/beauty/intelligence and overall allure, and the effect she has on others. What can I say?-Mia is beautiful inside and out and Koram detected this the first nano-second he laid eyes on her..LOL…The ending was crazy-amazing and I was left automatically downloading the entire series.
Some of the really cool aspects was learning about this advanced world of the Krinar's that we only get a glimpse of in this book. Their technology, way of handling conflict, and culture is definitely interesting and keep you wanting to know more. Also, their mandated food diet and it's effects across the earth was also keenly interesting. I felt like eating more veggies and salads like ASAP…lol
Narrator: Kathleen Godwin was superb. I loved her voicing, cadence and inflections for Mia and Koram, alike. Her pacing was great and she made it an overall excellent audiobook experience.
Having listened to all the audiobooks in this series, it's like peeling an exotic, unknown fruit from Krina…..you want more and each peel is more and more revealing!!! LOVED IT!!!
When you're in the world of the Reapers MC, you just have to sit back and relax and don't mind the raunchiness, vulgarity, roughness and constant stream of F-bombs that come your way. It's just part of this world….and, what a world it is! I was excited that this audiobook was finally released after I really enjoyed the first one. Some of the best parts about the book is entrance in the world of the Reapers MC with all of the gang such a Horse, Picnic, Painter….as well as Marie and the rest of the "old ladies" including sweet Em. It was great to get a kind of continuation of Horse and Marie's love story, and their wedding was awesome!!! Also, I just can't wait for Em and Liam's "Hunter's" story…seriously can't wait!!
This book centers on Rugar and his love interest, Sophie, who has a young son, Noah who is Rugar's nephew. Noah was so sweet. I really liked his part in this story. Yet, regarding his uncle Rugar, I was so curious as to how such an unyielding, tough, pull no punches, hardcore biker guy like Rugar was going to give up his freedom with women to finally settle down with "the one." Well, he definitely meets his match with Sophie. Sophie is beautiful, with her green eyes and auburn hair. And, she is equally fiery in temper, sharp mouth, and has a strong character just as Rugar. Well, ok, let's also add stubborn to that list…LOL So, with these two there is definitely a lot of power struggles in their relationship. But, ultimately, Rugar and Sophie find that fighting their love/lust for one another is a battle neither can win. Rugar and Sophie resolve their differences after many experiences that end up drawing them together. Of course, there is passionate sex, action, crazy MC parties, kidnapping, violent moments that all race the reader to the HEA.
I have to say this is not my favorite kind of romance because I appreciate more softness in the Hero/Heroine relationship and I didn't think it was as good as Horse and Marie's chemistry and love story, but it worked well in the end. I mean not all biker romances have a sweet and fluffy edge to them…..for Rugar and Sophie it was hardcore all the way around.
Narrators: I thought the dual narration between Tatiana Sokolov , Todd Haberkorn was good. ---Nothing absolutely spectacular, but overall good and enjoyable.
PLEASE AUDIBLE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE RELEASE THE 3RD BOOK IN THE SERIES…
I can't explain why I decided to read/listen to this book. I'm not at all into kidnapping books and I felt sick at the idea of romanticizing the awful tragedy of being taken against your will. So let me tell you---this book was an experience for me!!! It's one in which you hate to admit you liked it. In fact, it was intriguing to me. This book is very well written, and the emotional conflict of the heroine, Nora is portrayed very well. And, how can Nora not be conflicted as she is taken away from all she knew and whisked off to a tropical island where she was subjected to a sexual world she never volunteered for? Her captor, Julian remains somewhat of a mystery, even though he does share some aspects of his life. I would assume we will learn more about Julian in Book 2. Nora describes Julian as a dark angel with great wealth and who she is drawn to (since she first met him), but she knows he's dark and can't help but get sucked into his black hole. Just as reviewers on goodreads and other sites have indicated this book is very similar to the concepts of 50 Shades of Grey. Yet, there's no doubt Nora was held captive, but what she never expected was to fall, irrevocably, in love with her captor Julian. Julian has a complicated and traumatic background and he has decided against going the traditional route in wooing Nora and has decided almost like caveman-style on steroids to take her and make her his. This is also irrevocable. This book is dark, it's painful, erotic and definitely well-written. AZ has created two characters who become inseparable and there's no going back. I can't romanticize this aspect, it is what it is.
Narrator: I thought the narrator was excellent. Shirl Rae performed very well.
The thing I love about MMA romances is that I always feel inspired to hit the gym harder, no excuses….lol
Skyla Madi has gone on my radar with this fabulous, little book! I was lured into this world of excitement, sexual attraction, great friends, hot banter, MMA matches, and plenty of scenarios that lent themselves to great moments between Olivia James and Seth Marc.
At the beginning of this book, Olivia is getting over a "stupid-woman" syndrome as she FINALLY breaks it off with her chronically, cheating boyfriend, Blade, after 6 years. Despite the disapproval of her family and best friend Selina, Olivia stayed in this bad relationship for whatever reason. So, when she's working out at her father's gym post breakup, she encounters Seth who is sculpted, strong and just a perfect specimen of a man. As Olivia checks him out she's caught by this cocky, confident man and the body language between the two is just steamy and full of promise!! This is one of the things that this author does very well. She's has created a series of combustible, exciting scenes with hot chemistry, banter and sexual tension between beautiful Olivia and badass Seth, with a fun group of friends, such as Jackson (Seth's best friend) and wild-child, Selina.
When I let go of my mind's tally of all of the implausible situations, I enjoyed this book to the fullest. I loved the build up in the relationship between one-night-stand extraordinaire Seth Marc and Oliva, who really didn't realize how beautiful she was. The lack of pretension and arrogance on behalf of Oliva was refreshing--because she really was a sight! I loved hearing about her beauty and allure through Seth's eyes. Blade had really done a number on Olivia making her feel less than her true worth, but from the get-go, Seth knew she was something special and different. I also loved the way Olivia handled her cocky bad boy..she was fierce!! Go girl!!! And, Seth was a perfect combination of badass and sweet. I loved the way Seth protected Olivia and was sensitive to the things that she needed from him.
The MMA fighting scenes were exciting and were written in a way that I felt as though I was there. Seth's problems with his mother, history with his father, the keen interest Olivia's boss showed toward her, as well as the relentless pursuit and change of heart by her loser ex-boyfriend added another level of interesting dimension to this story.
I also liked it when the narrator actually sang Seth's theme song as he came down to the ring. I thought the anticipation for the big fight with Seth's rival Don was rather anti-climatic, but not completely lost or bad. Overall, this book is completely smooth-worthy.
Great ending and I can't wait to read the next book. Please get it on audible!!! Please!!!
Narrator- I really liked Em Eldridge's narration. She did a great job, and I even liked her voice for Seth.
Wow! I was so impressed with the concept and set up of this book from the beginning! I was drawn into sexy, competent FBI agent Cole Fletcher who led his squad team into a cult compound to save the followers from a planned suicide mission by their leader. In this compound is where he finds Savannah, huddled in a corner. His primal, instinctive response to Savannah, the beautiful young woman with the vivid emerald eyes, was awesome. I loved his instant attraction to her where he couldn't get her out of his mind. Cole walks a fine line in following his protective inclination to seek out Savannah. Yet, the other inclination he puts a lot of effort into fighting is this strong need to be with her and have her close to him, despite consequences.
There are so many things that worked well in this book. The chemistry between heart-throb, agent Cole and the lovely Savannah was great. When they are together there is this quiet comfort with an underlying buzz of sexual tension that pushes them to the brink of their romance. Cole brings a very willing Savannah to live with him and I loved how kind and sensitive he was to her. This book is filled with both the small and very grand sweet and thoughtful gestures Cole extends toward Savannah. Savannah is equally smitten and consumed by her longing for Cole. She wants him and blossoms under his protection, security and affection.
So, even though there were sweet, endearing moments that had me sighing, "awe." The part of the book where Cole actively resists Savannah lingered for too long and became a stagnant place where not only are Savannah and Cole sexually frustrated, but I felt frustrated for them!!! I felt as though I was reliving Twilight with Edward and Bella who slept with one another and just cuddled for like what years???--(Although for Cole and Savannah, bedtime "cuddle only" nights lasted a few weeks---but, how realistic is that?? Who can do that for so long????). During this time, Cole also made STUPID decisions regarding other women that had me seeing red! And, Savannah's reaction to these situations was sad to me. I felt her vulnerable position in living with Cole most during these awkward situations that Cole created. When Cole finally does give in to Savannah it was a beautiful, scintillating, smoky-hot kind of love. It enhanced their already comfortable relationship and strengthened their bond.
Overall, I found this book to be enjoyable. It piqued my interest as I anxiously rooted for both Cole and Savannah as they worked toward their HEA. One of my favorite parts is toward the end, when Cole's last secret is revealed and he comes grobbling and begging Savannah to take him back and never leave him. Wow!! I loved it because it was Cole's breaking point and the last point of surrender to his insatiable need and commitment to Savannah, the love of his life. He finally stopped resisting and that made me very happy. Also, the epilogue was one of the sweetest---OMG seriously adorable and sweet---LOVED IT!
Narrator: I thought Josh Goodman's voice was very sexy and swoon worthy. What a great voice for Cole! Josh also did a good job with the female voices. He really enhanced the experience of this audiobook.
