The reader seems to be putting pauses in sentences rather oddly. It tends to leave you feeling that the story makes little sense. However, I did try rethinking the sentence without the misplaces pauses and they make perfect sense so I suspect it is the reader not the writer.
Totally different from his Bartemeus series and it starts with twists and turns and excitement galore. Ms Raison does a very good job bringing the story to life. Anxious for book 2 already.
Yes, I loved Artemis but it is done and it was time for his to start something new and this is every bit as good a series. Riley is a plucky young man who although shifted to the 21st century from the 19th, he handles it well despite the obvious confusion from such a time shift. Chevron is not Holly but she is a smart teen who just happens to be working for the government. I can't wait for book 2.
I am reading the series despite the rather romance-y story. The author does a good job of developing characters and suspense. She makes likable people and a rich environment. What is sad about this edition is the readers who can't even keep the voice for each character straight so you sometimes miss who is actually speaking and get surprised when someone says something that doesn't fit the voice you hear.
I enjoy audio books but a bad reader can ruin a story.
I first discovered Adrienne's writing with First Fossil Hunters and when I saw this one available I was excited. She did not disappoint one bit. Her research is flawless and she ties it together very well.
My only sorrow is that the rest of her books are not available from Audible. Though I did discover today that The Poison King is now and downloaded as fast as I could. I hope they will go back and get her other 2 books on folk-lore and natural history.
Strong medicine but it's good for you. Take it!
This book is like salt-free potato chips, empty calories without anything interesting.
Pinkwater at his best! Nobody could read it better than the author for this one. A must hear!
Author Barbara Freese was intrigued by the subject of coal and passed her interest on to us in this book of the history of coal and how it effected the course of human history. I couldn't put it down!
