It is 1923. Evangeline (Eva) English and her sister Lizzie are missionaries heading for the ancient Silk Road city of Kashgar. Though Lizzie is on fire with her religious calling, Eva's motives are not quite as noble, but with her green bicycle and a commission from a publisher to write A Lady Cyclist's Guide to Kashgar, she is ready for adventure. In present day London, a young woman, Frieda, returns from a long trip abroad to find a man sleeping outside her front door. She gives him a blanket and a pillow, and in the morning finds the bedding neatly folded....

Where does A Lady Cyclist's Guide to Kashgar rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    This is a "Top Ten"!

What did you like best about this story?

I found the story and characters absolutely spellbinding. The crescendo of suspense is perfectly modulated, and the author's imagery is nothing short of gorgeous.

Which character – as performed by Susan Duerden – was your favorite?

Eva. Another reviewer complained about the narration. I thought the narration was pitch perfect, a very feminine voice for a very feminine story. Every character has his or her own voice. The listener will notice changes in diction between them.

Who was the most memorable character of A Lady Cyclist's Guide to Kashgar and why?

Spoiler alert .............. Millicent. What a tragically awful and misguided person!

    Any additional comments?

Please give this beautiful book a listen!

Herman Wouk's sweeping epic of World War II, which begins with The Winds of War and continues here in War and Remembrance, stands as the crowning achievement of one of America's most celebrated storytellers. Like no other books about the war, Wouk's spellbinding narrative captures the tide of global events - and all the drama, romance, heroism, and tragedy of World War II - as it immerses us in the lives of a single American family drawn into the very center of the war's maelstrom.

The season of gift-giving is here, and this year we've got something special for our members: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Yuletide whodunit "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle". In this holiday-themed short story, Sherlock Holmes and his trusty sidekick, Dr. Watson, follow the trail of a lost hat and a Christmas goose through the streets of London and into a rapidly expanding mystery.

It is the summer of 1950 and a series of inexplicable events has struck Buckshaw, the decaying English mansion that Flavia's family calls home. A dead bird is found on the doorstep, a postage stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak. Hours later, Flavia finds a man lying in the cucumber patch and watches him as he takes his dying breath. For Flavia, who is both appalled and delighted, life begins in earnest when murder comes to Buckshaw.

People start dropping dead around Charlie, giant ravens perch on his building, and it seems that everywhere he goes, a dark presence whispers to him from under the streets. Strange names start appearing on his nightstand notepad, and before he knows it, those people end up dead, too. Yup, it seems that Charlie Asher has been recruited for a new job, an unpleasant but utterly necessary one: Death.

I don't know how this gets so many great reviews. My husband and I agree this book was rather stupid. After a strong beginning, the story quickly became tedious and annoying. You might like it if you're a fan of slapstick and can tolerate an excess of supernatural creatures.

Mick must piece together why their house is full of cameras pointed at holes in the walls and how a nighttime intruder bypassed all the locks. Meanwhile, the town of Broken Harbor holds something else for Mick: disturbing memories of a childhood summer gone terribly wrong.

Seriously, I thought the author would eventually reveal that this family (and all of Broken Harbor for that matter) was poisoned by lead plumbing, what with all the mental health issues and shoddy construction.

As I listened to the first two-thirds of the book I kept telling my husband this was one he shouldn't miss. I found the story and setting fascinating. I laughed at the bursts of levity that popped through. I loved the sidekick.

Alas, in the end I was just getting through a tedious resolution. In summary: a great story with an excess of psychiatric patients.

    >The Chaperone is a captivating novel about the woman who chaperoned an irreverent Louise Brooks to New York City in 1922, and the summer that would change them both. Only a few years before becoming a famous actress and an icon for her generation, a 15-year-old Louise Brooks leaves Wichita to make it big in New York. Much to her annoyance, she is accompanied by a thirty-six-year-old chaperone who is neither mother nor friend. Cora Carlisle is a complicated but traditional woman with her own reasons for making the trip.

What a great performance from Elizabeth McGovern! I loved how this story offered glimpses of early twentieth century America. I was imagining the lives of my grandmothers, both born in 1903, one very staid, the other a New York flapper.

Though jolted by the drastic change of pace towards the end, I have to say I'm glad the author let us in on the lifelong fates of the characters. It's a great story and an easy listen.

In late 2003, in his column in Entertainment Weekly, Stephen King called The Memory of Running "the best novel you won't read this year." This glowing endorsement of the audiobook resulted in Ron McLarty receiving a $2 million two-book deal from Viking Penguin. Also, Warner Brothers has shelled out big bucks for the movie rights to The Memory of Running, for which McLarty will write the script.

Wow. I loved this book! Our poor, hapless, completely passive character steps onto the roller coaster of life.

So many scenes are simultaneously outrageous and hilarious. Were it not for such shrewd levity, I could not tolerate so pathetic a character. Therein lies the brilliance of the book.

There's so much sadness, but it's mostly in the past. The story is really about moving ahead in spite of it all.

It's not often we get a character we can pity, laugh at, and then ultimately cheer to victory.

The author is also a favorite narrator. Great voice!

What made the experience of listening to Once Upon a River the most enjoyable?

Bonnie Jo Campbell's writing is gorgeous. All of the characters, even the creepy ones, were interesting. As Margo encountered them, I wanted to see what would unfold. I wanted to protect her!

What about Susan Bennett’s performance did you like?

She gave everyone a unique voice. Her voice and accent are very soothing.

Who was the most memorable character of Once Upon a River and why?

Margo, of course. For all her weaknesses, she's tough. She idolizes Annie Oakley, which I found to be a very sweet construct. Her morality develops through her own experience making it truly genuine.

    Any additional comments?

For me this was a very believable and creative tale of a teenage girl left to fend for herself. I was fascinated by her challenge to figure out where she fit in with the struggles between family, society, and her personal urges.A great character has profound weaknesses. Her strengths are revealed to her as she grows. She steadily walks the fence between victim and plotter. And anyone who had difficulties socializing at fifteen can relate to at least some of her behavior. Such stupid things we did as teenagers!Like it or not, the type of people she encounters are really out there, all too ready to prey upon our many homeless and abused children.I found this beautifully written and narrated book suspenseful, memorable, and insightful.Highly recommended!
