it would be really nice if any one of these stories, some of which actually started out with some sort of interesting premise actually fininshed...... I checked- it's not my device. The stories just kind of end, trail off , never actually finishing. Too bad. Gives audible a really black eye in MY book.
The stories are great but listening to this guy read is like nails on a blackboard. Ruined the experience for me. I wish I'd just bought a hard copy and read it in bed. Instead I listen to it while walking my dogs. Even that distraction is not enough to get past the terrible voice inflections. It's like every sentence is a question. I can not abide that. But the stories themselves are quite entertaining... very O'Henry-esk.
What a rant! Barry used to be really funny. Maybe he still is, but not in this book. Getting through the fist hour of this diatribe was painful, literally. He used to write absurdly on subjects he knew nothing about, and could be very amusing. but definitely NOT this time. Oh well, some times your the windshield and sometimes the .......
I used to love reading Tom Robbins. I so enjoy how he uses words, not just the context, but the flow and sound of words. I like words. But in this edition, the flow takes you down a very long, meandering, sorely spoiled waterway, on it's way to, where? exactly?
Characters that could have been fascinating, or at least amusing , are merely tiresome. The ebb and flow of language takes over where plot would better suit, and the narrative becomes about the words themselves instead of the thought they were meant to convey.
If you like to hear the droning of your own voice, you're in for a treat here! Even the philosophical overtones Robbins is expressing are lost in the mists of this verbiage.
And I so used to like his work. Maybe the judicious application of the drug induced state of mind so adamantly advocated here would help keep this tomb afloat.
You get sucked in and stay sucked. The characters are more real in this novel then in some of his others. This Is CHILD. Jack at his most intense, unemotional. realistic best. If you've been there, this novel will really put you back there. If you haven't, you won't want to go. But You still understand.
That's a great author. And an even greater character.
