  • Fat Is the New 30: The Sweet Potato Queens' Guide to Coping with (the Crappy Parts of) Life

The Sweet Potato Queens are back and bawdier than ever in Southern belle extraordinaire Jill Conner Browne’s ninth edition of the hysterical series. Having experienced pretty much ALL of the crappy parts of life, Browne feels it is her duty to render whatever assistance she can to her fellow sufferers - and she does so in her own inimitable fashion.

Her father taught her there are very few situations in life that we really and truly cannot change, and it is up to us to figure out how to either make fun OUT of them - or make fun OF them.

What did you like best about Fat Is the New 30? What did you like least?

Jill's wit isn't as sharp as the first book but is still there. The traditional religion angle is tedious and not what I was looking for.

What aspect of Jill Conner Browne’s performance would you have changed?

it's her book she can perform it however she wants. This is a really stupid question.

Could you see Fat Is the New 30 being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

    no

Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination. Rose Mary painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family; she called herself an "excitement addict."

If you could sum up The Glass Castle in three words, what would they be?

    Triumph over adversity

What other book might you compare The Glass Castle to and why?

The Poisonwood Bible - dysfunctional father dictating the lives of family members.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

This question format is flat out stupid.

    Any additional comments?

Glad I listened to Half Broke Horses first to set the tone. No one could make up these stories as incredible as they are. Facinating in how each family member dealt with the cards they held. Would love to see other stories from the view of the sisters and brothers. For all the people who play "poor me" who have much more than the Walls did, this is an inspiration. Can never guess where the "plot" will turn. You are always rooting for "the right thing" to happen, even tho it seldom does.

Jeannette Walls's memoir The Glass Castle was "nothing short of spectacular" (Entertainment Weekly). Now, in Half Broke Horses, she brings us the story of her grandmother, told in a first-person voice that is authentic, irresistible, and triumphant.

Would you listen to Half Broke Horses again? Why?

Written by a real horse person who understands horses and riding and the parallels with many life experiences. Based in history, well researched, not predictable but believable.

What other book might you compare Half Broke Horses to and why?

If you're a horse person who likes a thread of real horsemanship run thru a memorable and entertaining story, listen to "The Horse Dancer." Print version not available in the U.S. tho.

Who was the most memorable character of Half Broke Horses and why?

Lilly, she's real, honest, straightforward and opinionated.

    Any additional comments?

The people who critized the reader should write their own books and read them, for pete's sake why be picky about someone's accent.....

With dressage the third most popular horse activity in the US, there are lots of us to appreciate this well written, carefully crafted novel. Unpredictable, believeable, bringing Endland's backstreet neighborhoods to life and evidencing the author's accurate riding knowledge, this book will be thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who's ridden or studied dressage. Ranks right up with Water for Elephants.

In 1973, Secretariat, the greatest champion in horse-racing history, won the Triple Crown. The only horse to ever grace the covers of Time, Newsweek, and Sports Illustrated in the same week, he also still holds the record for the fastest times in both the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes. He was also the only non-human chosen as one of ESPN's "50 Greatest Athletes of the Century".

Not the best written book I've ever listened to and the reader fails miserably on some pronounciations that should have been so easy -- Keeneland, Lexington's track, for one. But, the story is interesting, sidebars fit in nicely. Insight into the owners' lives and relationships is amusing. If you lived in Lexington or followed Thoroughbred racing anytime in the last century, the names of the social gentry and places will fit together.

A teen idol at 15, an international icon and founder of the Brat Pack at 20, and one of Hollywood's top stars to this day, Rob Lowe chronicles his experiences. Never mean-spirited or salacious, Lowe delivers unexpected glimpses into his successes, disappointments, relationships, and one-of-a-kind encounters with people who shaped our world over the last 25 years. These stories are as entertaining as they are unforgettable.

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the ten consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Have tried and tried to follow this laborously tedius story. Gadzillion characters with very few differences. Giant leaps from one semi-plot line to the next -- at least I'm looking for a reason for the jump -- and still looking for a plot 8-10 hours into it. Maybe if you listen while doing absolutely nothing -- not driving, mowing lawn, pullng weeds -- you can find and follow a plot.

I listen to all genres of writing and this has bored me to pieces. Maybe if you're already a huge follower of this author you can follow it. I don't find any reason to waste the time. Wish I hadn't wasted a credit. Even loaned it to my husband who's a huge sci-fi fan, bored him to death too.

In 1836, when she was nine years old, Cynthia Ann Parker was kidnapped by Comanche Indians. This is the story of how she grew up with them, mastered their ways, married one of their leaders, and became, in every way, a Comanche woman. It is also the story of a proud and innocent people whose lives pulsed with the very heartbeat of the land. It is the story of a way of life that is gone forever.

If you like gruesome details of tortures inflicted on whites by Indians and vice versa, this is the book for you -- no bloody or hideous act is left undescribed. I kept looking for a story, and there is a sketchy one, but only enough to hang the blood, guts and torture on...
While I've read many books about Native Americans and this time period, this is the first one that seemed to be totally obsessed with detailing every horror. I didn't expect that to be left out, but I did expect more of a story line and details that didn't include blood.....

Laugh-out-loud funny and deeply touching, Beth Hoffman's sparkling debut is, as Kristin Hannah says, "packed full of Southern charm, strong women, wacky humor, and good old-fashioned heart." It is a novel that explores the indomitable strengths of female friendship and gives us the story of a young girl who loses one mother and finds many others.
