This book is essentially about channeling the collective spirit to allow you to justify taking advantage of others and think only of having yourself feel better. I could not get beyond the prologue and first chapter. Beware if you are not already a Law of Attraction/Hicks devotee. I can't belive I wasted my money on this pop cultish garbage.
I admit I doubt I would ever have read this book in print, but my criteria for audiobooks include a great narrator and a plot that doesn't drag to help keep me alert on my long commute. The characters are well developed and the alternate "Elsewhere" world rich and cohessive enough to be intriguing. The romances were a bit cloying, but I know that is what romance is about when you are a teenager as the heroine and target audience are - so I forgive that. Overall quite entertaining.
Although I am not a zombie or other monster fan, the rave reviews here about this book and the star-studded cast of readers lured me in. Well, I was left cold - like a zombie - listening to this one. It seemed silly rather than engaging or funny. I listened through to the end because it is quite short and I know a movie version is in the works, so I figured I would at least know what people around the water cooler are talking about if I gave this a chance. Time wasted. I also do not like Max Brooks' own narration introducing each of the other characters' sections. His voice is annoying. I would say he should stick to writing and not narrating, but I am not planning on reading anything else of his if World War Z is typical.
Although this was written in the 1960s, the crime itself is timeless and the sparse writing and realistic details of detective work are still engaging. I enjoyed the reminder of the challenges of gathering information in the pre-internet/fax/mobile phone era. The narrator is good and reads at a quick enough pace to not drag even in the interludes during which the detectives are stumped or just tailing someone.
