I found the characters unbelievable, they behaved stupidly, and for the most part seemed quite contrived. The story line was slow, tedious, and annoying. I kept listening just to see if by chance it would improve---it did not. All in all---a formulaic written book and an author I will avoid.
The Human Stain is a great work of literature with complex characters that leave the reader curious as to each individual?s motivation for his or her actions. Through a writing technique in which most characters are initially presented in third person, the reader might develop an initial impression of a certain character, only to get an entirely new perspective when that character tells his/her own story later in the book. There are a lot of surprises!
This book easily makes my top-ten list. It is a novel you will wish to discuss with others long after you have finished it.
One of the few books I could not put down (okay, take my headphones off). Perhaps a slow start, but turns into a very engaging mystery and interesting legal battle. Good Oregon regional color. (A small point: either the reader mis-pronounces "Spokane" and "Willamette" or everyone in Portland gets it wrong.) I look forward to listening to more books by Kate Wilhelm.
