I am disappointed only that the first few books in the series are not available in audio form.
The book is well written. I enjoyed the internal monolog that adds depth to tempi.
The reader is not perfect but IMO is not actually bad. I did not have problems following transitions between characters etc.
The story is mostly ok but there is about 20min of strait up religious ceremony in the middle that serves no purpose except extending the book.
Also I think too much time was spent trying to convey specific signs the tree cats were making rather than something like 'made the two handed sign for x'
These factors make the book seem boated.
Many parts of this book are wonderful. There are some great scenes. Unfortunately, the author destroyed the entire concept of Dexter as an exploration of humanity by introducing supernatural forces.
If I could give this book a negative score I would.
I thought I could deal with the change in narators but it is worse than expected. I would give this zero stars and return it if I could. 5 min in I had to stop. I will have to buy the paperback.
Why oh why switch narrators. I would have paid double for the same voice again.
This was a simple fun book with a beautiful performance. The multiple readers make single reader books pale in comparison.
For those who have trouble believing the author he is not kidding that there is no happy ending. Much the same as a Harry Potter book has no happy ending. Events within the book are wrapped up but evil still lurks and is not ultimately defeated. However, I would not classify the ending as a downer.
I have been enjoying the Brennan series and this is exactly what you would expect if you have listened to any of the others.
For new listeners to the series, the forensics are accurate but are not overblown, they take a second seat to plot and character. The books are classic detective tales with a fully fleshed out female lead. Internal dialog adds depth to the character.
All in all very much worth listening to.
I have only put down a couple of books in my life before finishing. This was one of them. I gave it a good shot, kept listening to see if it would improve and it just didn't. I was hoping for some interesting or inventive kills, a plot, something to warrant further listening. But it just wasn't there. Honestly one of the worst books I have every tried. I would recommend skipping this book.
