Bilbo Baggins, a gentle hobbit who loves the comforts of home, reluctantly joins a company of dwarves on a journey to recover plundered gold from a fierce dragon. It's a tale of high adventure and astonishing courage, and a magical prelude to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

We picked this book for a medium road trip, 45 minutes into the book was all we could take. The character voices were awful, sounded like 14 gents from Shady Shoals retirement home. To make it worse it sounded like it was mixed and recorded in a garage. Avoid this one like the plague

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the ten consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

The story good however, I just can’t get past the bad narration!!! The monotone delivery of Michael Kramer drives me insane & the same voice inflection at the end of every sentence. It sounds like he is gritting his teeth when doing the various character voices. The bar has been raised too high by Steven Pacey, Roy Dotrice and even Michael Page to spend time listening to this performance. A good narrator draws you into the world the author has created, with this book I feel like a automated weather station is reading to me.

    PASS!

In The Keeper of Lost Causes, Jussi Adler-Olsen introduced Detective Carl Mørck, a deeply flawed, brilliant detective newly assigned to run Department Q, the home of Copenhagen’s coldest cases. The result wasn’t what Mørck - or readers - expected, but by the opening of Adler-Olsen’s shocking, fast-paced follow-up, Mørck is satisfied with the notion of picking up long-cold leads. So he’s naturally intrigued when a closed case lands on his desk: A brother and sister were brutally murdered two decades earlier....

Enter the fantastical world of Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast Trilogy, one of the undisputed fantasy classics of all time. Novelist C.S. Sergey and Marina Dyachenko mix dramatic scenes with romance, action and wit, in a style both direct and lyrical. Written with a sure artistic hand, The Scar is the story of a man driven by his own feverish demons to find redemption and the woman who just might save him. Egert is a brash, confident member of the elite guards and an egotistical philanderer. But after he kills an innocent student in a duel, a mysterious man known as “The Wanderer” challenges Egert and slashes his face with his sword, leaving Egert with a scar that comes to symbolize his cowardice.

Isak is a white-eye, feared and despised in equal measure. Trapped in a life of poverty, hated and abused by his father, Isak dreams of escape, but when his chance comes, it isn't to a place in the army as he'd expected. Instead, the Gods have marked him out as heir-elect to the brooding Lord Bahl, the Lord of the Fahlan. Lord Bahl is also a white-eye, a genetic rarity that produces men stronger, more savage and more charismatic than their normal counterparts. Their magnetic charm and brute strength both inspires and oppresses others.

This story is very disjointed!! Poor character development, Isak goes from being a whipping boy on a merchant wagon to lord in waiting over the realm within a chapter. I had to force myself to finish this book, it was hard work. The story is jumbled up, it feels like the writer is forgetting to tell you who is who and why we should care. Trying to eavesdrop on a conversation 25 feet away describes this book!! The pattern is clear, every book in Sci-Fi & Fantasy is between 4 and 5 stars……Really?

As they race to warn the king, they realize that more than the royal family is at risk - the very fate of the Earth is in jeopardy.

I just can't finish this book, Donna summed it up correctly!! The narrator is horrible, he does not pull you in. There is no character development, you are just dumped into the story not sure who is who and why you should care for any of them. And yes the endowment's are way overdone. I would rather listen to "The blade itself" from start to finish again rather than listen to one more chapter of this train wreck.

English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

It’s hard to believe all the 5 star ratings!! I love long in depth stories, especially for long road trips. This one kept putting me to sleep which is a bad thing while driving. The narration was good, they story was not. The author uses the word “magic” or “magician” in every other sentence, this does not make it a fantasy.
