It's 1988 and Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morley have only just met. They both know that the next day, after college graduation, they must go their separate ways. But after only one day together, they cannot stop thinking about one another. As the years go by, Dex and Em begin to lead separate lives. And yet, unable to let go of that special something that grabbed onto them that first night, an extraordinary relationship develops between the two.

Kathy says: "Great book, bad ending"
"Laughed out loud... I never do that"
    Overall

This is one of the best books I've read in a long, long time. I already miss the characters. Nicholls does an incredible job of capturing both the female and mail perspectives.

Amy Redwing has dedicated her life to the Southern California organization she founded to rescue abandoned and endangered golden retrievers. Among dog lovers, she's a legend for the risks she'll take to save an animal from abuse. Among her friends, Amy's heedless devotion is often cause for concern. To widower Brian McCarthy, whose commitment she can't allow herself to return, Amy's behavior is far more puzzling and hides a shattering secret.

Fred says: "Dean's got his groove back"
    "Disappointing and Rambling"
    Overall

Disappointing and rambling, this is definitely not one of his best. I felt extremely cheated by the ending, which depended too much on the supernatural and tied things up too rapidly and with a heavy-handedness not worthy of this usually adroit author. I like dogs ... have two of them myself. But ENOUGH already with the endless description of the eyes and the coat and the wagging tails, and .... and ... and.

  • Under the Banner of Heaven

    • ABRIDGED (5 hrs and 23 mins)

At the core of this book is an appalling double murder committed by two Mormon Fundamentalist brothers, Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a revelation from God commanding them to kill their blameless victims. Weaving the story of the Lafferty brothers and their fanatical brethren with a clear-eyed look at Mormonism's violent past, Krakauer examines the underbelly of the most successful homegrown faith in the United States, and finds a distinctly American brand of religious extremism.

Craig Hansen says: "Not bad, but a bit biased"
    "Riveting"
    Overall

I have read and enjoyed all of this author's books, but find this one to be my favorite so far. Although not without bias, I thought his investigation of the history of Mormon fundamentalism both interesting and insightful. For those outside the faith, the Mormons inherent secrecy and exclusion of gentiles perpetrates an almost insatiable curiosity. Krakauers look at past and present events is riveting reading. I listened to the book nearly without interruption. My only complaint is that an unabridged copy was not available.
