  • Mr. Churchill's Secretary: A Maggie Hope Novel, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 48 mins)
    • By Susan Elia MacNeal
    • Narrated By Wanda McCaddon
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

London, 1940: Winston Churchill has just been sworn in, war rages across the Channel, and the threat of a Blitz looms larger by the day. But none of this deters Maggie Hope. She graduated at the top of her college class and possesses all the skills of the finest minds in British intelligence, but her gender qualifies her only to be the newest typist at No. 10 Downing Street. Her indefatigable spirit and gifts for codebreaking, though, rival those of even the highest men in government, and Maggie finds that working for the prime minister affords her a level of clearance she could never have imagined....

    Katherine says: "Lovely"
"Lite Fun read with a Little of Churchill thrown in"
Would you listen to Mr. Churchill's Secretary again? Why?

Probably not, got it first time

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Well I rarely sit, usually standing at easel or walkin dogs while listening - but it held my attention

Have you listened to any of Wanda McCaddon’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, how can one avoid her narration-in this book it suited the story

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I have enough mental stress naming my paintings to adequately do justice to this story of brilliant orphaned girl raised by brilliant American lesbian aunt after her brilliant British parents die in accident or do they? How she gives up MIT to become a code breaking heroine secretary for WSC.

    Any additional comments?

It's light historical thriller-fiction, fun to read/listen to in between volumes of The Last Lion. After reading the fictional "Mr. Churchill Secretary" I would suggest reading/listening to the non-fictional "Long Sunset: Memoirs of Winston Churchill's Last Private Secretary " it is excellent, story & narration.

  • Infidel

    • UNABRIDGED (16 hrs and 33 mins)
    • By Ayaan Hirsi Ali
    • Narrated By Ayaan Hirsi Ali
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

This New York Times best-seller is the astonishing life story of award-winning humanitarian Ayaan Hirsi Ali. A deeply respected advocate for free speech and women's rights, Hirsi Ali also lives under armed protection because of her outspoken criticism of the Islamic faith in which she was raised.

Paul Mullen says: "Tough, Candid Assessment"
"Compelling true story & quality production"

This is an amazing Book! The story is compelling even without knowing that it is an actual person living thru these events. Every woman should listen to this book and everyman interested in learning about the actual life & cultures in Africa and how that is effecting the rest of the world, should listen to this book.
I don't know how she lived through all this.
Aside from the actual content, I am always concerned with the quality of the book-production values and this book did not disappoint. Ayann Hirsi Ali narrates and it gives an authenticity to the work that a professional narrator could not convey with the intensity of one who lived thru the amazing account of her life. One of the Best Audible Books I've ever listened to.

  • Thunderstruck

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 53 mins)
    • By Erik Larson
    • Narrated By Bob Balaban

In Thunderstruck, Erik Larson tells the interwoven stories of two men: Hawley Crippen, a very unlikely murderer, and Guglielmo Marconi, the obsessive creator of a seemingly supernatural means of communication. Their lives intersect during one of the greatest criminal chases of all time.

Michael Jones says: "Marconi, murder, mix well"
    "Brilliant! again"

For anyone who has not had the delicious pleasure of reading an Eric Larson book such as "Devil in the White City" or "Isaac's Storm" this his most current book, "Thunderstruck" will only leave you with an appetite for more of his unique style of merging the terrible with the technological.
Erik Larson has once again written a masterpiece of nonfiction. In Thunderstruck he merges the macabre with the emerging advances in wireless communication of the early parts of the last century. I will not go into specifics of the characters involved, you can find other reviews for that. What I will say is this is one of the Best audio books I've listened to this year. Great Narration! Great Writing! Great Story! Download this you will not be disappointed!

  • In Cold Blood

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 27 mins)
    • By Truman Capote
    • Narrated By Scott Brick
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Why we think it’s a great listen: It’s a story that most people know, told here in an unforgettable way – an audio masterpiece that rivals the best thrillers, thanks to Capote genre-defining words and Brick’s subtle but powerful characterizations. On November 15, 1959, in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas, four members of the Clutter family were savagely murdered by blasts from a shotgun held a few inches from their faces. There was no apparent motive for the crime, and there were almost no clues.

    Lisa says: "Still the Best"

I've been waiting for quite sometime for an audio version of "In Cold Blood" to come out. It seems that either the book or the movie version were the only varieties readily available for many years. (There might have been a tape version out sometime in early nineties but I've never been able to get a copy) I am not going to go into detail over the content of the book because everyone who reads should know it is a classic book based on horrendous-cold-blooded-mulitple-murders that took place in 1959 in Kansas. The late Truman Capote's Eloquent skill as writer made it a fascinating read. What makes this audio edition a fascinating listen and one of the best audio book experiences one can have, is the narration by Scott Brick . His voice and tone fit the book and make it one of the best Audible books ever offered. Give up watching CSI a few nights and listen to this, you won't regret it!

  • The Human Stain

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 30 mins)
    • By Philip Roth
    • Narrated By Arliss Howard, Debra Winger

It is 1998, the year in which America is whipped into a frenzy of prurience by the impeachment of a president, and in a small New England town, an aging classics professor, Coleman Silk, is forced to retire when his colleagues decree that he is a racist. The charge is a lie, but the real truth about Silk would have astonished his most virulent accuser. Browse other Philip Roth on

David says: "Delve into the characters"
    "The Roth to Read!"

I've listened to almost entire canon of Roth's work, some of it I slugged through, not this one. It has some of the most intriguing and interestingly complex character studies of all his books. This book is a rarity, sharp social commentary and great fiction and wonderfully read. Much better than the movie, a cliche - but the movie leaves out the memorable French Prof one will relish despising. This one is worth the time to listen!
