Almost through with this listen and feel like my throat is sore from listening to this reader rasp her way through this story. I like Elizabeth Lowell tremendously, but I will not ever listen to anything of hers or anyone's read by this person again. It is full on painful and simply ruined the recording for me.

In A Fatal Winter, Max Tudor - Anglican priest, former MI5 agent, and village heartthrob - investigates two deaths at Chedrow Castle. But his growing attraction to Awena Owen complicates his case, as does the recent arrival at Chedrow Castle of a raucous group of long-lost, greedy relatives, any one of whom has a motive for murder. With a cozy setting, intricate puzzles, and a handsome (non-celibate) priest doing the sleuthing, the books in this series are destined to become instant classics in the mystery world.

I fall into the group that really liked this book. The characters are nicely drawn, some a bit crazy, some quite heart-warming. 4 stars is about as high as I ever go for a mystery, so this is the highest rating on my own personal rating scale. As for Michael Page, I liked his rendition of The Care of Wooden Floors better (which I recommend overall). I didn't care for his voice for Max -- too old as someone else commented.

Laurens, a New York Times best-selling author, thrills millions of fans with each book in her sensuous Bar Cynster series.

Both beautiful and headstrong, Amelia Cynster has decided to marry the man of her dreams. Lucien Ashford is handsome and sexy - but Amelia is tired of waiting for him to make the first move. So slowly, carefully, she begins to lay her trap.

Simon Prebble does his usual excellent rendition of the characters, and but for that, I wouldn't have finished it. The interminable sex scenes that are usual in Laurens' books are even more frequent in this one. The plot looked promising when she finally got round to it midway through, but stalled and fizzled before it had a chance to develop.

A well drawn story line for a romance. A bit too much sex, but not overly lengthy scenes at least. And the golden-throated Simon Prebble......enough said there. I'll be looking for more by this author. As for Simon, I'll listen to (almost) anything he reads.

One criticism of the production......the chapter headings come almost on top of the end of the previous chapter's ending text. The editor could have done better! I notice that this happens with certain books but haven't noticed whether they are all by the same recording company.

Defiant Highland beauty Fiona Sinclair is shocked by her brothers’ treachery. With no choice but to wed, Fiona makes her own private vow: Though she may sacrifice her freedom, she will never surrender her heart. Commanded into marriage by the king, Myles Campbell is no more willing than his reluctant bride. Still, she is a rare beauty, passionate enough to warm even the coldest marriage bed.

Tried to ignore the reader's strident effort at the reproducing the characters' accents because the story was interesting at times. I could feel my throat clutching in response to her grasping and straining her way through this. Can't understand others' positive reviews for her performance. To my mind, this is someone who needs more training at being a reader or needs to find another field. I'll be returning this one.

This may have been the first romance I read years ago and it has stayed in my mind all these years. So happy to find it on Audible! I wasn't even totally sure of the name of the book or author anymore, but when I listened to the sample, I knew this was it. Kate Reading does a nice job with the characters, although her dramatization of Lady Jessica's angst over her attraction to Dain is a bit over the top. That's about the only criticism I can make of her reading.

This story is simple, straightforwardly told, and not drawn out as some romances are to fill pages. I'm sure I will listen to it again and again. I wish they were all this well done.

Having enjoyed Finch's Lenox series, I was eager to hear his first effort in another genre and very happy to discover it was terrific. I had to read it afterwards because it's one of those I can appreciate even more in print. Finch is a fine wordsmith and I can only hope he turns out many more pieces of fiction.

The audio version falls down for me in the narration, however. The reader had difficulty doing women's voices in normal speaking volume such that in dialogue the sound levels between male and female speakers was quite uneven at times. I had to rewind and raise the volume in a number of places to hear all sides of a conversation when a woman was in the mix. And then the male voices were too loud. Where I felt the reader excelled was in his ability to do the various accents. I don't think anyone could have handled that any better than he did.

What disappointed you about On Dublin Street?

When am I going to learn that hundreds of 5 star ratings doth not a good book make!?!?!? Unfortunately I read only after I downloaded that this author has previously only written for the YA audience. Had I discovered that, I would have passed this up. The premise and the characters are a stretch, but mostly it was just plain boring. But at least there was consistency in that the reader chosen was equally flat in her delivery. No tonal depth, no character differentiation, far too much snark.

Has On Dublin Street turned you off from other books in this genre?

What genre was it?! Not romance, not erotica. YA sex maybe. A new genre. Just what we need.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Paula Costello?

I would have been embarrassed had any of the readers I love done this book.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    Not a one.

This was one of my first listens and I am re-listening now. Recommend to those who like historically based mysteries,or vampire lore as opposed to vampire horror. I liked all the voices. Pacing is flawless. While at times I became impatient with the level of detail, for the most part thought it was necessary to set the scene, tone, or context. Beautifully done overall.

It’s the early 1980s—the country is in a deep recession, and life after college is harder than ever. In the cafés on College Hill, the wised-up kids are inhaling Derrida and listening to Talking Heads. But Madeleine Hanna, dutiful English major, is writing her senior thesis on Jane Austen and George Eliot, purveyors of the marriage plot that lies at the heart of the greatest English novels.

I've listened to this book twice and will again soon, I'm sure. David Pittu couldn't have done a better job in bringing the voices in this book to life. Eugenides is one of the best and this production does him justice. The ending was unexpected and bittersweet, but very modern, and, so, here it seemed appropriate.
