In this riveting personal account, an authentic American hero relives the perils and triumphs of eight harrowing patrols aboard one of America's most successful World War II submarines. Courageous deeds and terror-filled moments - as well as the endless hard work of maintaining and operating a combat sub - are vividly recalled in Calvert's candid portrait.

    "Very Interesting and Captive"

This is one of the best books I have ever received from Audible. If you are interested in the WWII era Navy this book is a must have. After listening to this book I found myself watching Das Boot to see the struggles the German submariners had against our anti-submarine forces. I was excited every day on the 45 minute drive to/from work that I would get to hear more about the USS Jack. Excellent book.

I really, really enjoyed this book. I had already heard many of the stories it contained but there were plenty of things I had never heard. I'm not sure why so many reviewers had a problem with the reader, I thought he did a good job.

"Easily the best book I have downloaded"
    Overall

If you are a fan of NASA in the 60's-early 70's you need this book. Even though I knew the outcome of the missions I would still find myself tensed up during some of the missions. When Apollo 11 was in its final approaches to landing on the moon I was on the edge of my seat. This is the first book I have downloaded where I started over from the beginning as soon as the book was finished.

This was an excellent view into the life of the enlisted Navy of the 1940's. Anyone who finds this period of Naval history interesting should enjoy this book very much. Audio quality was very good for a Format 1 recording.
