In a book, such as this, where so much is borrowed from another text, it is often hard to be surprise, however, Mr. Darcy's Refuge has several changes that were surprisingly well conceived and extremely refreshing.
It has been some time since I have read either the original or one of the many variations, but I found myself being immediately drawn to Elizabeth and Darcy and hoping that they would once again realize just how wonderful their lives could be together if they would just put aside their pride. :)
This version had less of Kitty, Lydia, Mrs. Bennett, Mr. Collin, and Lady Katherine De Bourgh, and I am truly grateful. Of course they were not missing entirely, however they were not as obtrusive and so the story had far less whining and far less verbal baggage. For those who like the incessant whining of Elizabeth's sisters and the sharp tongue of Lady De Bourgh, these qualities have been passed on by others and because they are relative new comers it is fun to hear their side of the story.
Several of the characterizations were over done, but did not distract from the overall performance.
A possible spoiler, well not really, let's face it: we are talking about Darcy and Elizabeth - Reynolds does not shy away from the passion of the wedding night, it is intense and mildly graphic. However, it is in fact just the one scene and was completely appropriate for the newlyweds.
There is not a character in Palacio's novel that does not feel completely authentic. I would love to read more of Auggie's story, he is truly inspirational.
This is a must read for all.
It's a wrap.
I realize that technically I used four words, but, my review, my prerogative. A short novella to tie-up several loose ends. I don't want to give anything away, so I'll stop here.
Loved the entire series. I'll now move on to Kagawa's companion series, Iron Fey: Call of the Forgotten.
Let me just say, I believe in the adage, "If you don't have anything nice to say..." However I will suggest that you listen carefully to the preview before you purchase this really good READ.
"Before I Fall" is a great read, but I suggest you only start when you have enough time to finish. You really need the time to become invested and then ride it out until the conclusion. I get why everyone enjoyed it, but I have to say it was just a bit too long for me. I had my emotional moment with the book about three quarters of the way through. I am not willing to say more because I really don't want to spoil it for those who have not read it yet.
I was concerned about starting this book when I did. A student at the school where I teach chose to take his life and I thought my timing might have too big of an impact. However, I feel like I read an accurate portrayal of all the multiple emotions felt by those left behind and the one who chose to leave. I have several students who knew it was in my queue and are now reading it for themselves. One has suggested that it is helping. I can only hope.
This installment of Artemis Fowl, is not my favorite, but it has not put me off the series completely. I really can't put my finger on what I didn't like, however I know that it was the dulcet voice of Nathaniel Parker that secured the finish.
I'll read at least the next book before I decide whether to finish the series or not.
Update: I have finished the series and would recommend it to everyone.
I have always been a fan of Sherlock Holmes and Lane's adaptation/prequel, to the stories I know, was wonderful. I was engaged from the start and did not turn it off until it had finished. I'm hooked and looking forward to the next installment.
Code Name Verity takes flight and you will need to hold on tight to finish the ride. This story is packed with detail and I know I missed quite a bit while listening. I have already put this title back in my queue, next time I will read along as I listen. A fabulous story of friendship and one that will stay with me for a long time.
This is a series worth investing your time. I can't wait to continue with the story.
