Just as 200,000 fans are pouring into town for Race Week, a body is found in a barrel of asphalt next to the Charlotte Motor Speedway. The next day, a NASCAR crew member comes to Temperance Brennan’s office at the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner to share a devastating story. Twelve years earlier, Wayne Gamble’s sister, Cindi, then a high school senior and aspiring racer, disappeared along with her boyfriend, Cale Lovette. Lovette kept company with a group of right-wing extremists known as the Patriot Posse.

I wonder if there comes a time when a writer is so completely out of ideas for a reoccuring character? I do feel sorry for Kathy Reichs. I have no doubt that she has supplied us with enthralling tales over the years but it seems as if Tempie is changing somehow. There was hardly any of the "technical talk" I've read in the last two books but the writer felt the need to educate us on the vaious enroads "to" and "from" the NASCAR circut. I was hesitant to purchase because of the plot setting but rather thought that the "mystery" should outshine any ambiance from the NASCAR venue; I was wrong. There were many lengths of conversation lent to explaining a subject within the NASCAR arena so that the reader would be better equipped to understand proceeding information. It was as if you knew a lesson was about to begin when you sensed a change in the plot....every plot.
There were countless characters in the story and I found myself relistening to keep up. Had it not been for the brilliance of the narrator to "find" so many voices I may have lost altogether.
I keep coming back to Tempie because I hope for more of the old but, so far, it's not quite happened in the last couple of books. Sorry.

John Lowery was declared dead in 1968—the victim of a Huey crash in Vietnam, his body buried long ago in North Carolina. Four decades later, Temperance Brennan is called to the scene of a drowning in Hemmingford, Quebec. The victim appears to have died while in the midst of a bizarre sexual practice. The corpse is later identified as John Lowery. But how could Lowery have died twice, and how did an American soldier end up in Canada?

I have always been a fan of Reichs. I am finding that her later works are becoming somewhat technical & I really have to listen to keep up with the plot. Storyline held me the fist couple of chapters then I began to have to really work at sifting the story from the technical. By mid listen, it started to get easier and the ending was good. Ms. Edmond is a good narrator for this series.

When Katie appears in the small North Carolina town of Southport, her sudden arrival raises questions about her past. Beautiful yet self-effacing, Katie seems determined to avoid forming personal ties until a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships: one with Alex, a widowed store owner with a kind heart and two young children; and another with her plainspoken single neighbor, Jo. Despite her reservations, Katie begins to let down her guard, putting down roots in the close-knit community..

Once again, Sparks has the uncanny ability to weave a tale that sucks you right in & shoots you toward an ending you didn't expect. The concepts are well paced so you have time to digest the emotions. The narrator does an excellent job with voice. Great story, great performance.

Second listen to this author. She carries a similar conceptual theme to the first book but buries it deep within a completely different storyline. Love her ability to wind family into her storys so that you can see yourself playing a part also. Narrator does a great job of keeping to the emotions which make for a great listening experience.

First for this author. I found the concept to start the story a bit quirky but completely believable. Author guides you through plots, people & situations with ease. I found myself visualizing many of her scenes because of her descriptions. Story line held me and the ending was just as you would hope it would be! Narrator carried perfect cadance and emotions for the themes. Not a waste of time. Great listen!

    Story

The writer never tires of describing the space around her so you always feel as though you're included. While the writing follows a predictable cadance the story concept is not a believable one. I found that it was hard to beleive a large drug company would allow so much "hands off" in the management & R&D of this new drug. Parts of the story after half-way through were laborious to listen to. The romantic ending was totally unexpected & with all the descriptive rhettoric throughout the story I felt that little was given to this tender monent. It feels as though the writer runs out of steam & just wants to get the story over in about two chapters. Overall, the writer has a gift for descriptive characters and scenes. The narrarrator was soft spoken & seemed to do a good job at drawing her character from the descriptions given.
