Here is a visionary analysis of how the politics of fear, secrecy, cronyism, and blind faith have combined with the public sphere's degradation to create an environment dangerously hostile to reason. Never has there been a worse time for us to lose the capacity to face the reality of our long-term challenges, from national security to the economy, from issues of health and social welfare to the environment. As The Assault on Reason explains, we have precious little time to waste.

I recommend this book to everyone! While originally disappointed that Al Gore did not narrate this book, I did enjoy hearing Will Patton perform on the side of the good guy.

I am interested in seeing how this book brings Americans to action.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I was really looking forward to listening this book, but the narration ruined it for me. Each sentence trailed off and I could not hear the last word or two ... of each sentence. It was very frustrating.

Anne Lamott meets Elizabeth Gilbert in this inspirational, side-splittingly funny exploration of the power of living with love, forgiveness, and honesty. Glennon Melton became a sensation when her personal essays started going viral. Giving language to our universal (yet often secret) experiences, her hilarious and poignant observations were read by millions, shared among friends, discussed at water coolers, quoted in The New York Times, and have inspired a social movement.

If you could sum up Carry On, Warrior in three words, what would they be?

    Read This Book!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Carry On, Warrior?

When Glennon writes a letter to her son about how she and her husband would deal with his coming out as gay ... if he ever did. The blog and letter was written when her son was 10 and probably not even sure what the future held. The blog Glennon writes speak to our hipocrasy about marriage, being Christian, loving all God's creatures no matter who they decide to love.

What does Glennon Melton bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She dictates her own blog, and it feels like you are spending time with Glennon. It was a real treat.

Chez Panisse opened its doors in 1971. Founded by Alice Waters, the restaurant is rooted in her conviction that the best-tasting food is organic, locally grown, and harvested in ecologically sound ways by people who are taking care of the land for future generations. The quest for such ingredients has always determined the restaurant’s cuisine, and over the course of 40 years, Chez Panisse has helped create a community of local farmers and ranchers.

Where does 40 Years of Chez Panisse: The Power of Gathering rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    Top 5

What did you like best about this story?

I listened to this audiobook and it was amazing. If you like the style of reporting commonly used by NPR, you will love it too. Not only did Alice Waters narrate a good portion of the book, but scores of others chimed in with their perspective and recollections. Music was carefully chosen to accompany the various segments. And the icing on the cake, was that this is a topic near and dear to me ... local foods over agri-business production of food. Local farmers, butchers, foragers, wine makers and more. This was delightful.

One of the premises of this book from the start is the notion that the Bible is infallible. I don't buy into that premise. I had to stop listening and wish I could get my money back. I should have done more research on the author before I downloaded this audio.

Who understood the risk inherent in the assumption of ever-rising real-estate prices, a risk compounded daily by the creation of those arcane, artificial securities loosely based on piles of doubtful mortgages? Michael Lewis turns the inquiry on its head to create a fresh, character-driven narrative brimming with indignation and dark humor, a fitting sequel to his number-one best-selling Liar’s Poker.

Jill Pagano says: "Finally, I understand what happened!"
"Clarity focused on a confusing market"
    Overall

Fabulous book. I read Liar's Poker way back when and after seeing Michael Lewis' interview with Jon Stewart, I downloaded the book immediately. I was not disappointed. Michael manages to get more information than seems possible and then weaves a great narrative.

Am I furious at the subject matter, yes. Did Michael do us all a great service writing the tale ... he sure did.

When Barbara Kingsolver and her family move from suburban Arizona to rural Appalachia, they take on a new challenge: to spend a year on a locally-produced diet, paying close attention to the provenance of all they consume. Animal, Vegetable, Miracle follows the family through the first year of their experiment.

    Sydney says: "Eye opening"
    "My absolute favorite!"
    Overall

I am 19 minutes away from the end of the book and I am so sad. I want to stay in Barbara Kingsolver's world on the farm and continue learning about eating locally and more responsibly. She is so skilled at expressing her thoughts and masterful at interweaving useful information for all of us.

I highly recommend this audio book. Yes, it is long but I did not even notice.

I enjoyed listening all 8 hours of it. I felt like Stephen King was in the car and I enjoyed hearing what fed his creative efforts. I liked hearing his pet peeves about writing too. I might like to pick up the book and reread that portion because I enjoy hearing people's suggestions for good writing.

    Enjoy!

Forensic pathologist Janis Amatuzio first began recording the stories told to her by patients, police officers, and other doctors because she felt that no one spoke for the dead. She believed the real experience of death, namely the spiritual and otherworldly experiences of those near death and their loved ones, was ignored by the medical professionals, who thought of death as simply the cessation of breath. She knew there was more.

This was so enjoyable I could not wait to get in my car each morning and evening. The authors voice is gentle and the subject matter right up my alley.

Maybe this book is easier to read than to listen to. I usually LOVE Marianne Williamson, but this was so difficult to listen to. She read so fast and it all sounded the same.

Maybe I will skim the book at the Library.
