I wanted to like this book but I really couldn't get behind the narration. Norma Lana was just unexciting and flat as a narrator, and the accents were so bad they were distracting. I kept trying to listen to this book but I would keep getting bored and turning it off within a few minutes. I can't really say whether the writing wasn't keeping me interested or the narration was just so bad that it turned me away from the book, but either way, I don't recommend spending the credits on this book.
I already own the Kindle version of Untamed but when I saw that it had been released as an audiobook and read by Kaleo Griffith, I had to buy it again. If you like romantic suspense, this is an excellent, excellent read. I am a huge (pretty much exclusive) fan of romantic suspense and have read an enormous amount of books in this genre (too much romance is boring for me, but suspense only doesn't really pull me in) and I have to say, Pamela Clare is by far the best I've found so far.
Kaleo Griffith is a truly talented performer. As a fluent French speaker with Scottish relatives, I was interested to see how he handled both the Scottish and French accents in this book, since poor accents really ruin the book for me. I must say, he blew me away. While it's true that many of the words were said incorrectly, his accents were so good that half the time I didn't even notice until much later, if at all. I was able to tell who was talking by the tone and accent he was using, instead of having to wait to be told. Excellent job.
As any longtime lover of audiobooks will tell you, a bad narrator can ruin a good book, and a great narrator can make any book seem fantastic. Happy to report, Mr. Griffith is one of the best I've ever encountered. (And I have listened to a LOT of audiobooks in my day.)
I must admit, I was surprised at first when he reads the women's lines in a female voice. (The falsetto made me giggle a little, especially when he does southern accents) but I got used to it in, oh, approximately five minutes, and after that, found myself wondering why all romance audiobooks don't have a male reader! It really adds something to the story.
I highly recommend this book and the narrator. Here's hoping the next one comes out soon.
If what you want is romantic suspense, you'll love this book. I love reading a love story with an interesting backdrop (I like romance novels but I can't take it if nothing else is going on in the world other than the two people falling in love.)
However, be warned, there are strong elements of romance and suspense. If you're looking for romance only, or suspense only, you will be disappointed.
