"This book will give you nightmares," cautions The New York Times. Richard Preston takes us inside the ongoing war against bioterrorism, investigating the anthrax attacks of October 2001 and the potential for a future bio-attack using smallpox or, worse yet, a new superpox virus resistant to all vaccines. "As exciting as the best thrillers, yet scarier by far, for Preston's pages deal with clear, present and very real dangers," says Publishers Weekly.

    Mark says: "Excellent and Timely!"
"Will make you wash your hands a lot more often"
    Overall

Excellent book, even if a bit dated in parts (Iraq was still being run by Sadam at the time of publishing). Still, a very good synopsis of the science behind microscopic weapons of terror, complete with graphic descriptions of the deadly effects (that you know you want to hear).

December is the time of the annual Ceremony at which each twelve-year-old receives a life assignment determined by the Elders. Jonas watches his friend Fiona named Caretaker of the Old and his cheerful pal Asher labeled the Assistant Director of Recreation. But Jonas has been chosen for something special. When his selection leads him to an unnamed man, the man called only the Giver, he begins to sense the dark secrets that underlie the fragile perfection of his world.

A fable of what humanity might become if those in charge sought a "perfect" world of efficiency, and homogeneity at the price of the human spirit.
