This is a wonderful book for young adults to read. It has all the required elements for a coming-of-age novel. You experience the angst, frustration, joy and growing pains with a little touch of history and values too. Unfortunately, I found it to be somewhat melodramatic, but if that's what you like, go for it!
I thought I'd wait until I was in my forties before I tackled this book. I'm thinking now that maybe I should have studied it in school. I did recall lots of excerpts from it as I came across them, but overall it did not have the profound effect on me that I was hoping it would. I found it to be extremely tedious at times and somewhat hard to follow (or at least keep my interest). Joe Morton is an excellent narrator, but this book did not really deliver for me. Sorry.
I've always heard that these books, considering the time they were written, are very racists and sexists. I had very little interest in Bond or his affairs and I could care less about what he goes through or even how he comes out of any given situation. The narration was stuffy at best and, I thought I'd never say it but, the movie is a whole lot better than the book. Guess the movie was done when audiences were a little more socially conscious.
I had no idea that someone who was labeled by the media as a "brat" is actually very eloquent and mature. If you had a prejudice against him, hopefully your opinion will change after hearing him describe his life to you through this audio. Not only do you realize how much he has experienced, but you also gain a new respect for how he handles everything he goes through. I see him in an entirely different light now and I'm really glad I gave his autobiography a chance.
This is probably the best audio book I have ever listened to. It was almost like sitting at a reading of a play and having the different characters dramatize their roles. It was also a book that I was very apprehensive to read simply because of the time period and subject matter. Now, I'm really glad that I actually decided to give it a chance. It kept my interest and rewarded my time without insulting my intelligence. This book was thoroughly refreshing and I will recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good, well-developed story with realistic developments.
