A compelling novel of desire, secrecy, and sexual identity, In One Person is a story of unfulfilled love—tormented, funny, and affecting—and an impassioned embrace of our sexual differences. Billy, the bisexual narrator and main character of In One Person, tells the tragicomic story (lasting more than half a century) of his life as a “sexual suspect,” a phrase first used by John Irving in 1978 in his landmark novel of “terminal cases,” The World According to Garp.

John Irving treats his characters with respect. This is not voyuerism or sniggering in an alley at outrageous behaviour, it is an honest, funny and human treatment of a life that needs to be met on its own terms. I love this author and Mr. Hickey does a great job with the material. This is a great an worthwhile listen.

Welcome to Derry, Maine. It's a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real. They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made 28 years ago calls them to reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city's children.

In the 1920s the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Indian nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath their land, they rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe. Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. The family of an Osage woman, Mollie Burkhart, became a prime target. Her relatives were shot and poisoned. And it was just the beginning, as more and more members of the tribe began to die under mysterious circumstances.

    S. Blakely says: "An outstanding story, highly recommended"

What made the experience of listening to Killers of the Flower Moon the most enjoyable?

It is impossible to characterize anything about this book as enjoyable. It is a recounting of a tacit conspiracy by an entire community to expropriate the oil wealth of their Osage neighbors. No one comes out of this clean and I weep for victims of this injustice. This case was the initiating event leading to the creation of the FBI, because the local police and judiciary where in cahoots to perpetrate this conspiracy.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Killers of the Flower Moon?

The courtroom scenes where it dawns on one Osage woman that her white husband has conspired to kill her relatives and then her.

    Any additional comments?

I enjoyed the narration. It was clear and not over done. I'm sure it was a difficult assignment.

If you could sum up As You Wish in three words, what would they be?

    Joyous good fun!

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Andre the Giant.

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

Multiple narrators. Some as themselves, others by professional narrators. All of them charming and warm.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Anyone who has seen the movie ( and I saw it in its first run in the theaters ) has probably seen in more than once and has favorite scenes. This takes you behind the scenes and tells why and what is actually going on. Great good fun!

    Any additional comments?

This is an homage to Goldman, his book, the movie and the people that made the movie. It was an act of love, just as the movie was. It is charming, affecting and satisfying on many levels. If you loved the movie, you will love this book.

What made the experience of listening to Sherlock Holmes the most enjoyable?

Stephen Fry does a wonderful job of bring Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson and the whole panoply characters to rich and wondrous life.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Sherlock Holmes?

There are many moments where Sherlock is shown to be vulnerable and grateful for the steadfast friendship of his boon companion, Dr. John Watson.

Have you listened to any of Stephen Fry’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

When I find that Stephen Fry is the narrator of a book I am seeking, I am always thrilled, since I know I am in for a treat. He works at his narrations as an actor would. His deliveries are spot on.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It was deeply satisfying to hear the entire canon of Sherlock Holmes read in the order that it was published in bound volumes (not necessarily as published in magazines), together with the forwards that illuminated the background and the times during which the stories were written and published.

    Any additional comments?

Any fan of Holmes and Watson would enjoy re-hearing the tales in this order and by this narrator.

In a narrative that spans geography and time, from the Atlantic Ocean in the 17th century to a correctional institute in Texas in the near future, and told from the perspectives of five very different characters, Speak considers what it means to be human and what it means to be less than fully alive.

This is a haunting exploration of what it means to have language and to hear and speak it. The lives of the characters captured in blocks of text and passed down and ultimately finding their way beyond our world.
My hat is off to the narrators for giving depth and feeling to this poignant and moving work. It is more diary, or multiple diary, than novel, but it accomplishes its work. You will think deeply on what it means to speak, what it is to hear, and what we are to feel. The voice of Mary is particularly compelling. This Audible production is top drawer.

The year is 2026. China has taken over as the world's largest economy, while the United States, mired in an oil shortage, struggles to adjust to its diminished role. Then, a surprise attack throws the US into a chaos unseen since Pearl Harbor. As the enemy takes control, the survival of the nation will depend upon the most unlikely forces: the Navy's antiquated Ghost Fleet and a cadre of homegrown terrorists.

Between 1995 and 2007, the Republic of Ireland was the worldwide model of successful adaptation to economic globalisation. The success story was phenomenal: a doubling of the workforce; a massive growth in exports; a GDP that was substantially above the EU average. Ireland became the world's largest exporter of software and manufactured the world's supply of Viagra. But there were two big problems....

Would you consider the audio edition of Ship of Fools to be better than the print version?

Yes. Having Roger Clark narrate in his gentle brogue was a great touch.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Berty Ahearn; the crooked Irish ward healer who exemplified the feckless, hare-brained attitude of the Irish government.

What about Roger Clark’s performance did you like?

Roger Clark gives a wonderful turn with this narration. You can catch the flavour of the author's justifiable ire concerning the whole sordid mess.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A government of the crooks, by the crooks and for the crooks!

    Any additional comments?

My only quibble is the authors equating crookedness with conservatism. This is Ireland, after all. A liberal government in power would have just robbed the cookie jar under a different banner.

Conventional science has long held the position that 'the mind' is merely an illusion, a side effect of electrochemical activity in the physical brain. Now in paperback, Dr Jeffrey Schwartz and Sharon Begley's groundbreaking work, The Mind and the Brain, argues exactly the opposite: that the mind has a life of its own. Dr Schwartz, a leading researcher in brain dysfunctions, and Wall Street Journal science columnist Sharon Begley demonstrate that the human mind is an independent entity that can shape and control the functioning of the physical brain.
