I used to work for the Telepath’s Guild before they kicked me out for a drug habit that wasn’t entirely my fault. Now I work for the cops, helping Homicide Detective Isabella Cherabino put killers behind bars. My ability to get inside the twisted minds of suspects makes me the best interrogator in the department. But the normals keep me on a short leash. When the Tech Wars ripped the world apart, the Guild stepped up to save it. But they had to get scary to do it - real scary.

Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

This book is very different. A bit hard to stick with at first but worth the effort. It follows the lives of a Golum ( clay person who comes to life) and a Geni. Though a lot of hardships their paths cross and they help each other overcome the obstacles that threaten them. Great history of NYC, makes you feel like you were there.

Lauren is downtown Chicago's youngest elite realtor. She's also a witch. She must be - the fetching spell for Witches' Chat isn't supposed to make mistakes. So says the woman who coded the spell, at least. The tall, dark, and handsome guy sent to assess her is a witch too (and no, that doesn't end the way you might think). What he finds in Lauren will change lives, mess with a perfectly good career, and require lots of ice cream therapy.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?"

You would think a book told as diary entries with one main character would be dull...that is not the case here. The astronaut's survival skills are awe inspiring. This book would be a good advertisement for higher education. All the way through the astronaut meets each adversity as a challenge to conquer.

As I read I couldn't help but think with my vast science knowledge I wouldn't have lasted an hour!

    Great adventure!

I've read a lot of urban fantasies, but this book really puts a different spin on things. The main character is charming and funny. The plot is a stew of every weird mythical creature you can possibly imagine and then tweeked with a modern flaire. Leprechans as mobsters!

Light hearted entertainment with a sense of adventure.

    Sooo fun!

That is Jane Yellow rocks business slogan. Cool isn't it. Jane hunts evil vampires ( seems like an oxymoron doesn't it) It this reality even the vampires have been regulated. Non law abiding Vampires are hunted down and killed.. That is Jane's job and she is very good at it. There are great characters here with their own sense of morality and Jane carefully plots her way between them often risking her life for a just cause. The interesting part is that sometimes she hunts these rogues down as either a human or a mountain lion. The pace is fast and exciting with tons of sword play, indian legends and motorcycle riding. It is very entertaining!

Kitty Norville is back and in more trouble than ever. Her recent run-in with werewolves traumatized by the horrors of war has made her start wondering how long the U.S. government might have been covertly using werewolves in combat. Have any famous names in our own history actually been supernatural?
