Older books sometimes suffer from the information available at the time. This one does rather badly. The characters are so strange in this book. They go from being terrified of something quite unspecific to being jovially numb. It's quite unclear whether they are haunted or psychological unwell. In ways that don't make sense to any psychology I've studied. It neither ran true to the characters or the nature of hauntings. I found it very hard to finish and unsatisfying when I did.
Even when we have a book written in a time when we don't have a good idea clinically what is wrong with someone, I do expect good writing to supply a reasonable description. This rings sadly false.
This has been done several times in film, but they've never kept strictly to the book, which is a shame. It's a truly terrifying ghost story that has past the test of time. You may not want to listen to it at night alone. Excellent.
This is not brilliant writing but it's a good story and told well enough. The questions of what happened in Roanoke has always fascinated me. of course it's speculative, but it's interesting.
I love this series. This is silly and fun and very entertaining. The romance is a bit tiresome but I'm not a romance fan.
Love the bit with the snakes.
This is a fabulous romp through space and time. Fun, sneaky, very smart, I'm on the second book and panting for the third. Great Series!
This series focuses on characters who are recovering from the great war. Love the main character. Love the others as well. Very well written,
The story rambles a bit. I liked Bones of Paris better, but they're both excellent.
Tom Perry is back to his usual excellence in this book. It's a fabulous thriller, and an unexpected plot. The Jane Whitefields in general are a fabulous read and this is an excellent one.
You will want to probably take the order in sequence. I think you'd miss a great deal if you read them out of order.
This is such an excellent story that really is so undated for how old it is. And a very fine reading of it. Lovely Halloween fare!
Not great literature, but nicely done and fun to boot. The romance isn't icky. The villains are interesting and the reveal is very intriguing. The title has almost nothing to do with the plot, but it doesn't matter to the story.
This is a nice retreat of Sleeping Beauty with some very lifelike twists. It's a pleasant read. Enjoy!
Most of us who have one faith or another are rarely asked where the limits of our faith are. And what we would do to follow it radically. This book does that, It's beautifully written, but pick a day where you can sit in a corner after. The end is a stunner.
