Eerie, dreamlike, set in a world that is weirdly related to our own, The Gunslinger introduces Roland Deschain of Gilead, of In-World that was, as he pursues his enigmatic antagonist to the mountains that separate the desert from the Western Sea in the first volume of The Dark Tower series. Roland, the last gunslinger, is a solitary figure, perhaps accursed, who with a strange single-mindedness traverses an exhausted, almost timeless landscape of good and evil.

    "Disgusting images with no relevance"
    Overall

This story consists of a sequence of disgusting images with no redeeming storyline. I am haunted by the image of a young boy (my son's age) tasting his own excrement as his guts are forced out his mouth by the automobile that runs over him. The physics of the story world and the behavior of the characters are so unlike the real world and real people that the story has no relevance to the listener. A thousand mile long lightless tunnel inhabited by mutilated people may be scary, but it says nothing about our lives. The pointless ending is blatantly stolen from the Dr. Seuss classic "Horton Sees a Who". Read Dr. Seuss instead. He will enrich your life with an insightful story rather than simply leave you with ugly memories.
