In the heart of America, a metropolis is quietly destroying itself. Detroit, once the richest city in the nation, is now its poorest. Once the vanguard of America’s machine age - mass production, automobiles, and blue-collar jobs - Detroit is now America’s capital for unemployment, illiteracy, foreclosure, and dropouts. With the steel-eyed reportage that has become his trademark and the righteous indignation that only a native son can possess, journalist Charlie LeDuff sets out to uncover what has brought low this once-vibrant city, his city.

LeDuff delivers on the shocking goings-on of Detroit from the super-corrupt mayor to a super-corrupt judge to firemen who have to buy their own toilet paper because budgets are so mismanaged (ie, money pocketed by officials). Wish it was a tad more hopeful at the end, but it is what it is.

Narrator was good - think this is my first listen with him. But it would've been nice if some research had been done first to pronounce Detroit words correctly. Kil-PA-trick instead of KILL-patrick (who says that?). Mak-in-ack instead of Mack-in-aw Island. And the like.

    Overall, quite good and mesmerizing.

Chief Inspector Mario Silva and his team have a heavy work load with several high-profile cases. First, a suicide bombing that was apparently the work of a militant Islamist group. Then, a gubernatorial candidate is assassinated in broad daylight at a campaign rally. Could the cases be related? To complicate Silva's investigation, a criminal with a very bad grudge against the Chief Inspector has been released from prison and is plotting ugly revenge.

Recommended. Strong writing, great narration, smart mysteries - I really enjoy this Mario Silva series, set in Brazil. Setting gives it some great "flavor!' - and it's hard to beat a great revenge novel. This quote says it well:

"Perfect Hatred is a perfect thriller. No one writes the cold glint of evil in bright sunlight the way Leighton Gage does. And there's enough evil here—and heroism, too—for three lesser books."

On a rainy November day, police detectives Pia Kirchhoff and Oliver von Bodenstein are summoned to a mysterious traffic accident: a woman has fallen from a pedestrian bridge onto a car driving underneath. According to a witness, the woman may have been pushed. The investigation leads Pia and Oliver to a small village, and the home of the victim, Rita Cramer. On a September evening eleven years earlier, two seventeen-year-old girls vanished from the village without a trace.

Great pysch thriller! Poor Toby's been dealt a bad hand, but when he gets out of prison for two murders he doesn't remember committing, he expects to be able to start anew. Sorry to say, that's not going to happen...not when another girl ends up dead in this tiny town in Germany, and everyone assumes he's the guilty party. Small town thinking and small town secrets play large in this thriller, and you really can't wait to get to the end. I love Robert Fass' narration, and he does a great job on this police procedural. I don't want to say more and spoil it for anyone . . . !

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, it's a good book to remind you to think about HOW you want to live and what kind of life you want to live. What do you want your legacy to be? Not preachy - though God is mentioned - more "inspiring." And there are exercises and meditations to do that are helpful, too. All in all, a great way to start the new year - or any day of the year.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Find Your Purpose!

I plan on listening to this every few months as a refresher!

When Rob Hale wakes up in hospital after a motorcycle crash, he is told that Lena - the gorgeous blonde woman who was on the back of his bike - doesn't exist. The woman he describes bears a striking resemblance to his recently deceased sister, Laura, but has he really only imagined her? Convinced that Lena is as real as he is, Rob teams up with Rebecca Lewis - a London-based PI who has a mysterious connection to Laura - to follow the clues. He learns that even a close-knit community like the Isle of Man can hide dangerous secrets that will not stay safe forever.

Where does Safe House rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

At the top for sure - this mystery/thriller is up there with any great mystery writer, and maybe even a touch better, as it's smarter, more layered. Super story, perfect narrator for the work.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Well obviously Rob, the main character. There are puzzles at every turn, and he manages to somehow figure them all out without going nuts. He's just a regular guy, suddenly in the midst of unusal circumstances with something personal at stake.

Kind of cool that it's set on Isle of Man....which I had to look up on a map. It's a self-contained little island, which lends itself to being an important "character" in this book.

Which character – as performed by Simon Vance – was your favorite?

I really enjoy Simon Vance's narrations. He did Chris Ewan's other books, Good Thief's Guides. This time it's a different character (of course) and he alters his presentation accordingly. I'm always amazed at how good narrators are at conveying different characters, moods, even places through their delivery. This is no exception!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Uh, no I didn't laugh or cry - I'm not sure that would've been appropriate - but I was intrigued and had to keep listening to find out the end!

    Any additional comments?

LOVE IT. You'll become a Chris Ewan fan.

In this feverishly anticipated follow-up to 2011’s critically acclaimed The Boy in the Suitcase, Danish Red Cross nurse Nina Borg doesn’t realize she is putting life and family on the line when she tries to treat a group of sick Hungarian gypsies who are living illegally in a Copenhagen garage. Nina has unwittingly thrown herself into a deadly nest of the unscrupulous and the desperate, and what is at stake is much more terrifying than anyone had realized.

Would you consider the audio edition of Invisible Murder to be better than the print version?

Katy Kellgren's reading is AMAZING. She's dramatic without being OVERdramatic, and is easy to listen to.

What did you like best about this story?

I LOVED The Boy in the Suitcase, so was eagerly awaiting this new book. It's as good as everyone says - as good as the first, with more Nina Borg character development. Don't want to give away anything, but there are definite surprises along the way.

Caterina Pellegrini is a native Venetian, and like so many of them, she’s had to leave home to pursue her career elsewhere, mostly abroad. With a doctorate in baroque opera from Vienna, she lands in Birmingham, England, as a research fellow and assistant professor. Birmingham, however, is no Venice, so when she gets word of a position back home, Caterina jumps at the opportunity. The job is an unusual one.

I "found" this book after seeing a video by the author, where she talks about the backstory - an actual small town in New England that is purposefully flooded to make a lake. It was fascinating. And the story she writes here is just BEAUTIFUL, thoughtful, lovely! Don't think I'd ever heard Madeleine Lambert before, but she was really good narrating as well. I'd definitely recommend this, and look forward to O'Hara's next book!

In the grip of a Siberian winter in 1902, a serial killer in Vienna embarks upon a bizarre campaign of murder. Vicious mutilation, a penchant for arcane symbols, and a seemingly random choice of victim are his most distinctive peculiarities. Detective Inspector Oskar Rheinhardt summons a young disciple of Freud - his friend Dr. Max Liebermann - to assist him with the case. The Liebermann series are smart murder mysteries set in fin de siecle Vienna, and they're really, really good. A mix of a serial killer hunt plus real life people from the era = super cool stuff. PLUS Robert Fass is brilliant at narrating these. He's the perfect voice for them, both interesting and easy to listen to. I can't recall how I stumbled on this author, but I've read every single book in the series! :) Highly recommended!
