To live in a pristine land unchanged by man... to roam a wilderness through which few other humans have passed... to choose an idyllic site, cut trees and build a log cabin... to be a self-sufficient craftsman, making what is needed from materials available... to be not at odds with the world but content with one's own thoughts and company. Thousands have had such dreams, but Richard Proenneke lived them.

If you could sum up One Man's Wilderness in three words, what would they be?

it was ok to just listen to - but most of the enjoyment is seeing what Dick Proenneke sees.

What did you like best about this story?

    Dick's euphemisms and wit.

What disappointed you about And the Mountains Echoed?

i will happily try to understand to a friend or stranger with an accent - but when it's this much of a struggle to listen to a book i bought? c'mon - really? i think one of the narrators has a slight speech impediment, and it's making some of the words, along with the accent, completely unintelligible. before you think i'm *that* person who doesn't like subtitles or won't take the time to acquire an ear for an accent, i am not. however, i'm half-way through the book and sometimes have to rewind and listen over and over to figure out a word. and many times, i don't get it.

Would you recommend And the Mountains Echoed to your friends? Why or why not?

i have read Hosseini's other books and raved about them. sorry Audible - i might have to return this book and read it in order to appreciate it.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

a lot of the time i can't understand what the narrators are saying. very frustrating.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

i'm sure the story is good - if i could understand the narration.

    Any additional comments?

the authors previous books are magnificent to read and would highly recommend them to anyone. i have not listened to them.

What disappointed you about Envy: A Novel of the Fallen Angels?

after listening to a Nora Roberts book, i now get all kinds of romance recommendations from Audible. i didn't realize "Envy" is just that. i can't stand anything about it. same old formula - brooding law-enforcement/bad-boy - with a paranormal twist.

What could J. R. Ward have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

i don't like the narrator at all.

Would you be willing to try another one of Eric G Dove’s performances?

    no

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

disappointment. i thought it would be a good story, not romance formula.

Where does Listening Is an Act of Love rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

i loved this book of audio essays. i've listened to it three times, and a fourth time together with my sweet husband.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Listening Is an Act of Love?

oh, so many...laughter and tears in one book! i'd have to say the cousins who talked about their strict sunday school teacher was hilarious! and the Korean mother who told her daughter how she got her culturally undemonstrative husband to show affection told of a very broad-minded woman.i could go on, but won't - buy it, i guarantee you'll be inspired.

Which character – as performed by Dave Isay – was your favorite?

all of the people being interviewed.

Would you try another book from E. L. James and/or Becca Battoe?

    oh god never

What was most disappointing about E. L. James’s story?

that she thought there was a story

How could the performance have been better?

if i hear "holy crap" valley-girl style one more time i will hit myself in the head with a hammer.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Fifty Shades of Grey?

there weren't any scenes, per se. so - moot point.

    Any additional comments?

is the writer married to someone famous because i don't know how this book got so hyped.
maddening narration, implausible story line and tedious sex scenes. i took the other books in the series off my wish list pronto.

Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination. Rose Mary painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family; she called herself an "excitement addict."
