His second major venture into nonfiction (after Death in the Afternoon, 1932), Green Hills of Africa is Ernest Hemingway's lyrical journal of a month on safari in the great game country of East Africa, where he and his wife, Pauline, journeyed in December of 1933. Hemingway's well-known interest in - and fascination with - big-game hunting is magnificently captured in this evocative account of his trip.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Want to join the “superhumans”? Luckily you don’t have to run to catch up with them, thanks to McDougall’s and Sanders’ inspiring (and motivating) journey through history, science, physiology, health, entertaining characters and unlikely friendships. Full of incredible characters, amazing athletic achievements, cutting-edge science, and, most of all, pure inspiration, Born to Run is an epic adventure.

the mix of history, science and the story about the race itself was really well done. It was personal and universal. Deeply interesting topic on so many levels.

What about Fred Sanders’s performance did you like?

He was great. Nothing to crazy stands out but it was overall very well read.

This nationally best-selling novel from Pulitzer Prize-winner Jeffrey Eugenides was adapted into an acclaimed film by Academy Award-winner Sofia Coppola. A haunting yet wickedly funny tale, The Virgin Suicides has captivated countless readers with its intoxicating portrait of lost innocence. A brilliant fusion of dark humor and tragedy, it is an atmospheric, allegorical masterpiece about five oppressed, suicidal sisters and the boys who dream of rescuing them.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

It was all so slow, the narration and the story. I found myself wishing that the virgins would kill themselves sooner. Terrible but true. I was disappointed because I absolutely loved Middlesex.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

    he read it too slowly

In the late 1890s, Edmund Dene Morel, a young British shipping company agent, noticed something strange about the cargoes of his company's ships as they arrived from and departed for the Congo. Incoming ships were crammed with valuable ivory and rubber. Outbound ships carried little more than soldiers and firearms. Correctly concluding that only slave labor could account for these cargoes, Morel almost singlehandedly made this slave-labor regime the premier human rights story in the world.

Can a country known for its radical brutality become a country known for an even more radical forgiveness? More than a decade after the 1994 genocide, the Rwandan government has released tens of thousands of murderers back into the communities they ravaged. Survivors and perpetrators have had to learn to live again as neighbors.

Would you try another book from Catherine Claire Larson and/or Bahni Turnpin?

Maybe by Catherine Claire Larson, but not by Bahni Turnpin. The narration was so distracting that I couldnt see past it.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I didnt get that far, had to quit.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Bahni Turnpin?

Anyone. She spoke too slowly and dragged out words unnaturally. The worst part was that she put on Rwandan accents when she quoted Rwandans but she didnt ham it up when she quoted American men or other people. I couldnt listen to it. It also seemed overly sentimental in the reading. Very unnatural tones.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    No

    Any additional comments?

I couldnt finish listening even though I was in Rwanda at the time and wanted to learn more.

What did you like best about My Life with the Chimpanzees? What did you like least?

It was good to hear her perspective on her own life. It is short and simple book, more like an essay than a book. Its interesting, its just doesnt feel as worth while as so many other books on here.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The tone was a bit dull. Sometimes you could really tell when she was happy.

Was My Life with the Chimpanzees worth the listening time?

    Yes because its short.

    Any additional comments?

There is not much to this book. Maybe a good first read or if you already know alot about her.

The main one, Cally. Also Desdemona. Its so well dramatized.

The accients, the drama of it all. Its just perfect.
