After traveling through time in Shadow of Night, the second book in Deborah Harkness's enchanting series, historian and witch Diana Bishop and vampire scientist Matthew Clairmont return to the present to face new crises and old enemies. At Matthew's ancestral home at Sept-Tours, they reunite with the cast of characters from A Discovery of Witches - with one significant exception. But the real threat to their future has yet to be revealed, and when it is, the search for Ashmole 782 and its missing pages takes on even more urgency.

What made the experience of listening to The Book of Life the most enjoyable?

This is a GOOD book, but not a GREAT ONE!

Harkness tied up all of the major lose ends in the story (80%) and added a few additional twists that was a pleasant surprise (re-introducing an old character), but the last couple of chapters left some unfinished business.

This is supposed to be a trilogy but the questions concerning GALLOWGLASS, JEBARE/DeMINOCO, and whether Mathew and Diana will have a human or vampire death are left unanswered. If this is a trilogy only and Harkness does not plan to write in this universe again, then my rating of the story will be lowered to 2 STARS because she has failed to complete the story.

REGARDLESS, HARKNESS' SUPERB WRITING FINESS WAS NOT APPARENT IN THIS BOOK!

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the integration of an old character from Book 2 into the modern day family. I want to elaborate more but then I would ruin the one surprise that made me "happy" to see.

I also liked how Harkness wove Benjamin's story into the snippets of problems that popped up in Books 1 & 2.

Which character – as performed by Jennifer Ikeda – was your favorite?

Can't pick just one but I choose Diana, Baldwin and Isabeau.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, The first third of the book is really slow and it picks up in the second third, and then the action takes off towards the end.

The first part of the story is necessary for the plot build-up so you have bear through it to get to the meatier parts. It is enjoyable enough for the first round of reading, but I doubt I will listen to it again with the same eagerness.

    Any additional comments?

The narration brings the people to life for me even though some reviewers are complaining about INCONSISTENCIES IN SOME VOICES.

THESE ARE MINOR PROBLEMS for me.

Where does How the White Trash Zombie Got Her Groove Back rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This has to be in the top 2 or 3 for the year so far. I usually like to read a book first before I decide to get the audio, however with WTZ books I skip straight to buying the audio. I have yet to be disappointed with doing so!

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite character of course is ANGEL because she is tough as nails and also vulnerable at the same time, Her sense of humor and one-liners are hysterical. My close second character in THIS book is PIETRO and the fact that we learn so much more about his true personality. He is changing before our eyes.

    Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scene was when Angel and Pearce were stuck between freedom and certain death when Angel outfoxed Nicole Sabber to get them to safety. Unlike some reviewers, I will not hint anymore to what was said or done but I will say that I was snorting and hooting out loud!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes and I did! Mostly. Kids and animals still have to be fed.

    Any additional comments?

This book was a little different than the others because it was focused on one special op and the details and pitfalls that take place. Those details are somewhat drawn out, which is needed, but the pace of the story is different than the others. This installment read more like a casual spy novel with comedy sprinkled throughout.TOWARDS THE END THERE ARE MAJOR CHANGES THAT WILL REBOOT Angel's WORLD.

Most girls might think twice before getting engaged to someone like Reyes Farrow - but Charley Davidson is not most girls. She’s a paranormal private eye and grim-reaper-in-training who’s known to be a bit of a hell-raiser, especially after a few shots of caffeine. Her beloved Reyes may be the only begotten son of evil, but he’s dark and sultry and deeply sexy and everything Charley could hope for. Really. But when the FBI file on Reyes’ childhood happens to land into her lap, she can’t help herself: She opens it...and then the real fun begins.

Where does Sixth Grave on the Edge rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Even though there are multiple situations keeping Charlie busy, I can't really remember one scenario that stood out.

IT IS OBVIOUS, like EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, THAT THIS IS THE MIDDLE BOOK BRIDGING THE STORY ARC FOR FUTURE BOOKS.

    This book was just...THERE.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The most important aspect was the progression in her relationship with Reyes. Like I said before, the rest of the story didn't leave a strong impression.

What does Lorelei King bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

King makes this series one of the few that I purchase the audio rather than read the book first. The voices and acting bring the book alive!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

One of my biggest disappointments was that the humor was recycled and flat unlike the usual.

I was disappointed about this the most. I usually look forward to Charlie's comedy.

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

What did you like best about this story?

I really like the history aspect, giving what I believe to be an enlightening look at a period of history that I was not very knowledgeable of.

What about Davina Porter’s performance did you like?

The narrator does such a great job with the voices, especially the male voices, and the different dialects.

At the end when Claire and Jamie were in France fighting Jamie's demons. Very moving!

But now something - or someone - is attacking Cincinnati and the Hollows, causing spells to backfire or go horribly wrong while living vampires attack humans and Inderlanders alike. The pressures build when the city is quarantined to contain the unreliable magic, and Rachel must stop the attacks before the undead vampire masters who keep the rest of the undead under control are lost and it becomes all-out supernatural war.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Undead Pool to be better than the print version?

Absolutely!! I normally read a book first then order the audio only if the story is good enough for me to enjoy the story again. However I stopped doing that with the Hollows Books starting with 9 since Harrison proved to consistently deliver a good story and Marguerite Gavin brings to life the characters that I love.

What did you like best about this story?

The shift in Rachel and Trent's relationship and the changes in Trent's character.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The fight scene between Rachel and Al. I won't say more not wanting to spoil the fun for you.

What other book might you compare The Name of the Wind to and why?

This book has elements similar to Harry Potter and The Wheel of Time and maybe some others.

What about Nick Podehl’s performance did you like?

The narrator's performance is like the book in that his skill doesn't take off until Chapter 8. He is really good at performing unique voices for all of the characters and the acting is superb.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Would you listen to Night Broken again? Why?

Absolutely. I like to read a book first and then, if I really like the story, I will purchase the audio book. I like a book to have not just one plot but many and this one delivers. A good book also needs great character development and "Night Broken" delivers on this as well.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Night Broken?

I really like all of the scenes with the ex-wife and how the story was building up to the Ex's deflation of her mind games.

Have you listened to any of Lorelei King’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

She is a consistent and very good narrator. I have not heard a poor performance from her.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I wouldn't necessarily use the word "move" me, but a scene that I enjoyed was the fight in the garage and the follow-up viewing of the video of that fight being reviewed by the pack.

    Any additional comments?

I am glad to see the author injecting some new twists into the overall arc to give new life to the series as a whole. One sees these changes towards the end of the book.

This is not like any vampire story that I have ever read. Because of that I don't love it but the developing storyline is intriguing.
