If you want to learn how to grow a community, this is the book to get. At its core, it's not about social media - it's about communicating. Social media makes communicating easier technically, but it's easy to be on social media all day long and never communicate anything of value to the people who want to hear it. Chris and Julien show how to build a community of people who embrace your message.
I'm going to listen to it again now so I can get some action items for myself, and to really absorb the ideas in this book. Thanks guys - your book makes me happy.
I've always agreed that the future is a connected one, and this guy has convinced me even more. He's given me even more reason to continue down the path I'm on in terms of online marketing.
He needs a bit of coaching on the narration. He has a habit of going down in pitch consistently on the end of sentences, even though it might not be appropriate for the thought. I usually love when books are narrated by the author because I can catch the author's excitement for the subject. On this one, however, I think he's trying too hard to be good on the narration by leaving out his speaking style. I wouldn't mind a little bit more of speaking and less reading.
That said, I think it's a great book, especially for anyone who doubts even a little bit that the internet is here to stay. Great for company owners and managers who are resisting getting more involved in new media.
I love how this guy constantly emphasizes that ADD is a different type of mind and that it can be a blessing if you learn how to handle it. (I always tell the kids I teach that ADD is a superpower that you need to learn to control.)
You can really tell this guy has done his research and that he really cares about the ADD patient.
That said, OMG is he thorough. Reeeeeally thorough. I would appreciate if this extra thoroughness was put into separate sections so I could listen or not, depending on my needs.
He mentions that it's fine to skip around the book, but I don't think the chapter breaks match the sections in the audiobook. This means I can't just forward to the next chapter by pushing the >> key on my iphone. Big problem for me. I want to finish the book because it's great info, but I've had to take a break from it because there's so much info.
Since I listen while I'm driving, it's not practical for me to scroll forward, and anyway, even if I'm standing still, it's a real pain.
Fix those two things and this is a nearly perfect book.
It's clear that these authors understand the ADD mind. Just in the first real chapter I've gotten my money's worth, and there's lots more to go.
Don't think that the first part of the book is really what the book reads like. That's a forward from someone else, but it's not clear at first. There's a bunch of intro stuff. Stick with it and you'll be happy.
Some people have mentioned that the narrator is poor and puts the emphasis on the wrong words, etc. Not true. While it's clear that she's reading and she could be more animated, it's just an accent that you're hearing, not bad reading. This accent works to her advantage, because it lets me visualize a friendly neighbor lady talking to me, not some doctor-type that can't relate.
I felt I had to put a review on here ASAP because a couple of the reviews almost made me not buy the audiobook, and when I looked at the kindle version, the intro parts made it look like a boring book.
Give this book a chance and you'll love it. This book comes highly recommended by the author of Driven to Distraction, and also now by me.
I've been thinking of narrowing my marketing for a while, to focus on one area and one niche of customers. This book takes it even further and shows me how to do it step by step, and WHY I need to to it.
I love the "assignments." Some of them reinforce what I've already done in my business (via "Book Yourself Solid" by Michael Port) and some of them take it even further.
This is an excellent book and I recommend it for any solopreneur / entrepreneur who wants to really be serious about getting out of "overwhelm" and get their business on the right track.
With regard to the narration, it cracked me up that he came up with a different voice for each of his client quotes. Appeals to my theater girl background.
It's on my list of something I'd listen to more than once. There are few books on that list.
The examples were funny and I can tell Jim believes in what he's talking about.
Because of this book I've followed Jim's blog and bought a couple of his other books. I think he's a genuine guy. I wouldn't follow all of the advice in this book, but I think that's the case with any book. You always have to adapt advice to your own situation. All in all, I would recommend this book as part of several when learning how to market your business.

I love when an author reads his own books. You really hear the conviction in their voice about their subject, which is hard for an actor to reproduce.
Incredibly insightful book about the games culture and why it's so engrossing. Don't be scared off by the length of the book. Totally worth the time.
She outlines specifically what games give us and how we can use that in reality.
I like how in the second half of the book, Ms. McGonigal focuses on how games can be used to improve our lives and to address some of the larger problems affecting our world. Her research will make a huge difference in our world if we take it and run with her ideas.
Great job, and as a bonus, it's fun to listen to!
