Society believes the worst of Justin Alastair, the notorious Duke of Avon who is clearly proud of his Sobriquet, Satanas. It is he who buys Leon body and soul from a scoundrel in a Paris backstreet.

Set before the French Revolution, an English duke rescues a French "guttersnipe", with murky plans for his(?) future, but the brat turns the duke's plans on him -- Cinderella with a touch of Romeo and Juliet. This has always been my favorite Georgette Heyer book, and I love them all. "Devil's Cub" is the sequel, set in the next generation.

What did you love best about A Serpent's Tooth?

The interaction between Walt and Vic.
The gradual unfolding of the story.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I listened to this out of order. Now I have to go back and read/listen to them all in order.

    Which scene was your favorite?

He begins with the sheriff humoring an old lady by listening to her unlikely and disjointed story, then slowly circles out to a realization that her story is central to his current case, and he keeps it lively by including lots of interaction with the series' ongoing characters and their stories.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Nothing.

For centuries, the world of Safehold, last redoubt of the human race, lay under the unchallenged rule of the Church of God Awaiting. The Church permitted nothing new - no new inventions, no new understandings of the world. What no one knew was that the Church was an elaborate fraud - a high-tech system established by a rebel faction of Safehold’s founders, meant to keep humanity hidden from the powerful alien race that had destroyed old Earth.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, but I would recommend starting the series at book 1. This volume picks up almost immediately from the previous one.Read it because it is an epic story. Read it because you like seeing the process unfold, not just skipping to the end to see the result.Read it for action and romance.

Who was your favorite character and why?

There are so many to choose from!Merlin, Caleb, Sharleyn, Narmahn, Irys, Nimue...

Which character – as performed by Oliver Wyman – was your favorite?

    1. Irys, 2. Nimue

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Does losing sleep to listen count? How about bathing instead of showering because you had to hear the next bit?I laughed, cried, and held my breath (often!) while listening.

    Any additional comments?

To Audible: please post only reviews of the audiobook; that's what you're selling. A lot of the bad reviews of this book are by readers aggravated by the complex spelling of the names--not helpful in the decision to buy the audiobook!
Please keep Mr. Wyman as the narrator for the rest of the series!

I wish I had Mr. Weber's series outline, because I Want to Know how far towards the future anhilation of the Gbaba he is going to take us.

After centuries of stasis, the island kingdom of Charis began to defy the edicts of the Church of God Awaiting - egged on, some say, by the mysterious warrior-monk Merlin Athawes. Now, in the wars and intrigues that have cascaded from Charis's declaration of independence, the populous Republic of Siddermark is sliding into chaos.

Would you listen to Midst Toil and Tribulation again? Why?

Yes, inspite of the nearly illiterate narrator who not only mispronounces all of the names but also some common English words. The story is too good not to reread/relisten, but I have considered buying the ebook to avoid this narrator. I would have boycotted the next Audible book in the series if you had used the same narrator.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Midst Toil and Tribulation?

When Princess Iris admits that she has been converted to the reformed church.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

He mispronounced most of the names whose pronunciations had been long-established and familiar in the 5 previous books in this series. He also mispronounced quite a few common English words, making his reading sound like a third grader's at times.
PLEASE HAVE THIS BOOK RERECORDED, using the narrator of Like a Mighty. Army.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

World War on Mankind's Last Refuge!

    Any additional comments?

When you change narrators in a series, the new narrator should be . required to listen toprevious books in the series, especially sci fi stories which usually have made up names in them.

Some ETs have arrived to warn us that we've got five years to prepare to be invaded by really hungry, really dangerous aliens. This story is the start of a series that seems to get better as it goes (not that the first books aren't great!). The action is almost nonstop, and you can't help wondering how we're going to survive the roller coaster of preparation, off-world battles, and political change in the face of invasion.

I've been a fan of David Weber's Honor Harrington series for years. It's great to finally have unabridged audio versions of them. My only caveat is that the narrator is difficult to understand at times. Her voice is a good choice for Honor, but her interpretation is very different than my own has been (in my head) during my many re-readings of this book.

This is well worth listening to. The heroine is half American Indian/half Irish. For years she has pretended to be plain old 'Joann Walker,' but now her true heritage & name catch up with her and turn her life (and the Seattle police) upside down. Very entertaining. Now I want to get the second book in the series to find out what happens next!

With her greatest enemy dead, and on her way to be reunited with the family she'd been stolen from long ago, Yelena should be pleased. But though she has gained her freedom, she can't help feeling isolated in Sitia. Her Ixian background has changed her in many ways, and her newfound friends and relatives don't think it's for the better....

Kestrel says: "As good as Poison Study, perhaps better"
    "Addictive pleasure??"
    Overall

The main character, Yelena, is so engaging and so endangered that I blew through this book in 2 days, even though I like to ration my audio books. Now I have to have the next book, Magic Study, to find out whether Yelena manages to land on her feet again. Her attitude reminds me a bit of Sookie Stackhouse in Charlaine Harris' books -- never give up, and rarely give up the last word.
