As he describes the insatiable curiosity of Calamity's Indian friend No Ears, Annie Oakley's shooting match with Lord Windhouveren, and other highlights of the tour, Larry McMurtry turns the story of a band of hardy, irrepressible survivors into an unforgettable portrait of love, fellowship, dreams, and heartbreak.

I have tried to find compelling content on audible. So far even good books are too often ruined by bad renderings. Buffalo Girls is an exception. Long ago, I listened to the cassette version. Recently the Audible offering became my favorite. Larry McMurtry is a master at investing in character development and Betty Buckley is the perfect vehicle. You can't go wrong with Buffalo Girls. It will inspire you to dig unto the stories of the historical people. If you dig this, check out David Milch's "Deadwood" series that ran on HBO. - Good luck and good listening.

The world of ancient Egypt springs magnificently to life in this astonishing historical novel of love, war, political intrigue, and religious revolution. Told from the first person point of view, it is the story of Sinuhe, physician to the royal court of Pharaoh Amenhotep III and his successors in the middle of the tumultuous 14th century B.C.

I first read Mika Waltari's 2 volumes of The Egyptian over 30 years ago and they stuck with me and became my very first Audible acquisitions. At first I didn't warm up to the quality of the narration, but over the passage of time and after repeated listenings I have come to appreciate the performance.

If Ancient Khemet (Egypt) in particular or history in general is of much interest to you make these "Must haves"! Don't even bother watching that old movie of the same title, based on Mika's book. Do yourself a favor, read the book. I only wish Joan Grant's "Winged Pharoah" might someday make it to Audible.

To be able turn your deepest faults into your muse is an alchemy that David Milch has sincerely mastered. No writer past or present does for my spirit and intellect what he does. I am in awe of his craft and creativity. I look forward to the future in the hopes that I may enjoy new stories, scripts and plots by him. Enjoy this conversation and go back and watch every episode of Deadwood while reading the scripts. If you are a writer closely follow his guidelines, lessons and do heed his pointers.
