Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

I really enjoyed this one. If you have any elderly people in your life, it will make you want to sit and talk to them. The two different readers greatly adds realism to a story covering most of a life time.

Jack Ryan has only just moved back into the Oval Office when he is faced with a new international threat. An aborted coup in the People's Republic of China has left President Wei Zhen Lin with no choice but to agree with the expansionist policies of General Su Ke Quiang. They have declared the South China Sea a protectorate and are planning an invasion of Taiwan. The Ryan administration is determined to thwart China’s ambitions, but the stakes are dangerously high as a new breed of powerful Chinese anti-ship missiles endanger the US Navy's plans to protect the island.

Where does Threat Vector rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

By far one of the better books I have read.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes, Clancy really shows how to write action well.

Have you listened to any of Lou Diamond Phillips’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the only book that he has read that I can remember. Won't be the last as he has a true talent. Was easy to quickly recognize each character.

    Any additional comments?

This one had me scheduling time when I could listen and difficult to turn off. He has a great talent for taking you through actions scenes. The concept that computer hacking and infiltrating networks are as big of a thread as conventional weapons in warfare keeps you thinking throughout the entire book.

Jack Ryan, the former president of the United States, is out of office, but not out of the loop about his brainchild, the “Campus” - a highly effective, counter-terrorism organization that operates outside the Washington hierarchy. But what Ryan doesn’t know is that his son, Jack Ryan, Jr., has joined his cousins, Brian and Dominic Caruso, at the shadowy Campus. While a highly effective analyst, young Ryan hungers for the action of a field agent.

What did you like best about Dead or Alive? What did you like least?

What did I like best ? Good story line and many strong characters. What did I like least? I am a big fan of the previous book

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dead or Alive?

    Which scene was your favorite?

All of the intense action scenes ..... There were many

Do you think Dead or Alive needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Ridding the fence on this one.

    Any additional comments?

I wish they would have used Stephen Lang who narrated the previous book if not to just add a consistency to how the listener pictures the characters.

Four famed '60s radicals are gunned down at long range by a sniper. Under enormous media scrutiny, the FBI quickly concludes that Marine war hero Carl Hitchcock, whose 93 kills were considered the leading body count tally among American marksman in Vietnam, was the shooter. But as the Bureau, led by Special Agent Nick Memphis, bears down, Hitchcock commits suicide. But Nick is suspicious and asks his friend, the retired Marine sniper Bob Lee Swagger, to examine the data.

"Great book with a few let downs"
    Overall

Great book for the most part. I am a shooting enthusiast so appreciated the great detail the author went into regarding the weapons and how the trained used them. The "hero" was often believable though at times it was a let down when he would make catch phrase comments like something from a Arnold or Stalone movie. The ending was also a bit over the top. Still I found myself not wanting to stop listening.

"King keeps you guessing in this one"
    Overall

Do you remember those old episodes of Star Trek where they would beam down to a planet not knowing what to expect. Amongst the main characters would be that unknown Ensign or Cadet whom you just knew would get killed. You would know if Stephen King were to have ever written an episode of Star Trek as that unknown Ensign or Cadet would likely be the only one to survive in the end. Several characters whom I thought "This will be the one who becomes the hero, just ended up as another fatality. At times this book lost my interest but I dare not give up on it as I was stumped to find which, if any of the characters would make it to the end.

First, the unthinkable: a security breach at a secret U.S. government facility unleashes the monstrous product of a chilling military experiment. Then, the unspeakable: a night of chaos and carnage gives way to sunrise on a nation, and ultimately a world, forever altered. All that remains for the stunned survivors is the long fight ahead and a future ruled by fear—of darkness, of death, of a fate far worse.

This one had great potential but was just too strung out. It was disappointing to finally get to the ending just to find it has none. I doubt I will spend the money or Audible Credits to see if the story comes to a close in the book to follow, or the next....

    Overall

If I were to rate this book on it's aspects as a horror novel, I would give it a 4 out of 5. At times I found myself more drawn to how it covered childhood friendships. There is one chapter that just ruined it for me since it's participants were children ages 10 to 11. I don't think anyone could write about a Gang Bank and make it at all tasteful when it involves children.

Anita says: "an exceptional story that's had bad press"
"Regret that it ended the series poorly."
    Overall

I enjoyed the first 2 books of the series a great deal more than this third and final. The positive is the vast array of narrators which gave each character an identity seldom provided when a single person tries to create so many different voices.
The negative is the ending which was a bit of a let down. I guess I am just too much of a fan of the "happily ever after" ending which this one lacks.

Combat veteran and author Hans Halberstadt takes listeners deeper inside the elusive world of snipers than ever before, from recruitment and training to the brutality of the killing fields. Based on hundreds of hours of exclusive interviews, Halberstadt gets inside the sniper mind and shows how snipers think and interact with each other, how missions are planned and executed, how the weapons work, and even what happens when a bullet finally strikes its target.

There are only a few hundred snipers from all the services put together in combat at any one time, making this true inside story a rare and important event.

When we first meet 14-year-old Susie Salmon, she is already in heaven. In the sweet, untroubled voice of a precocious teenage girl, Susie relates the awful events of her death and her own adjustment to the strange new place where she finds herself. With love, longing, and a growing understanding, Susie watches her family as they cope with their grief. This story of seemingly unbearable tragedy is transformed into a suspenseful and touching narrative about family, memory, love, heaven, and living.

I am another who felt a good narrator would have added a great deal to my enjoyment. A good narrator can add so much just as a poor one can take away. This one suffered from that fate.

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

Suzanne says: "The scare is in the human nature under stress."
"Seemed to drag on at times"
    Overall

I have to admit that often when choosing which book to spend my 1 monthly Audible Book credit on, I try and find books longer in length. In this case, I regret it.
The first 10 hours of the book kept a good pace and I was thrilled to think that I had another 24 hours to go. It slowed down a good bit unfortunately. I guess I am also a traditionalist when it comes to books and movies. I want all the good guys to live and the bad guys to get what they have coming to them, hopefully at the hands of the good guys.
This book sways far from that. Another reviewer made comment on how the narrator made it difficult to distinguish between characters. This book has so many characters that I think it would be difficult for anyone to tackle the feat. If I could have given this book 3.5 stars I would have. It just drug on at times which kept it from getting 4 stars. I could see this easily becoming a movie, under 2 hours long.
