George Orr's dreams do change the world. He is the only one who knows it...he and the power-mad psychiatrist who is forcing George to dream a new reality - a better reality that is free from war, disease, overpopulation, and all human misery. But for every man-made dream of utopia, there is a terrifying, unforeseeable consequence...

Mubarak says: "Excellent Book, Bad Reader"
    "Dark, but thought provoking"
    Overall

Typical of LeGuin, this is a pretty dark view, but the unlying philosophy is thought provoking and worth your time. The narrator's flat intonation style, which might have been meant to enhance the darkness or gloom of the story, really put me off and made the reading feel monotonous at times.

He's the most unlikely hero you'll ever meet, an ordinary guy with a modest job you might never look at twice. But there's so much more to any of us than meets the eye, and that goes triple for Odd Thomas. For Odd lives always between two worlds in the small desert town of Pico Mundo, where the heroic and the harrowing are everyday events. Odd never asked to communicate with the dead, it's something that just happened.

    Sittingduck says: "Detailed Koontz"
    "A little disappointing"
    Overall

With such excruciating detail in most of the book, I was disappointed in the ending that has very little explanation and detail. It felt as if the author had either run out of ideas or time and just slapped something together to get the book finished. The character is still good, and the narration is excellent!

Edith Hahn was an outspoken young woman in Vienna when the Gestapo forced her into a ghetto and then into a slave labor camp. When she returned home months later, she knew she would become a hunted woman, so she went underground.

Catherine says: "An Amazing Story & Narration"
    "A must listen!"
    Overall

An incredible story that explores the complex nature of people who live with in times of chaos and confusion. No stereotypes here, but a true telling of people and how they manage through the war. One of the very best audible selections that I've listened to.

  • A Short History of Nearly Everything

Bill Bryson has been an enormously popular author both for his travel books and for his books on the English language. Now, this beloved comic genius turns his attention to science. Although he doesn't know anything about the subject (at first), he is eager to learn, and takes information that he gets from the world's leading experts and explains it to us in a way that makes it exciting and relevant.

Corby says: "Very informative, fun to listen to"
"Brings science to life. Nothing dull here!"
    Overall

It's the first audio book I listened to more than once, parts of it several times. Interspersed with the scientific explanations, Bryson's offers delightful vignettes of the scientists themselves, bringing a human face to highly technical material.

  • Master and Commander: Aubrey/Maturin Series, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (16 hrs and 39 mins)
    • By Patrick O'Brian
    • Narrated By Patrick Tull

    (1945)

    Story

This, the first in the splendid series of Jack Aubrey novels, establishes the friendship between Captain Aubrey, Royal Navy, and Stephen Maturin, ship's surgeon and intelligence agent, against the thrilling backdrop of the Napoleonic wars. Details of life aboard a man-of-war in Nelson's navy are faultlessly rendered: the conversational idiom of the officers in the ward room and the men on the lower deck, the food, the floggings, the mysteries of the wind and the rigging, and the road of broadsides as the great ships close in battle.

    Frank says: "Choice of Narrators"
"Great reading, but too much sailing jargon"
    Overall

Even after careful attention and some research on the web, I got bogged down in the jargon. The story is engaging, but the characters seemed lightly drawn especially considering the careful attention paid to the technical information. The reader was delightful, adding some character to otherwise dry information.
