David Mitchell, who you may know for his inappropriate anger on every TV panel show except Never Mind the Buzzcocks, his look of permanent discomfort on C4 sex comedy Peep Show, his online commenter-baiting in The Observer or just for wearing a stick-on moustache in That Mitchell and Webb Look, has written a book about his life.

  • What Really Happened: John Edwards, Our Daughter, and Me

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 39 mins)

In What Really Happened, Rielle Hunter offers an extremely personal account of her relationship with John Edwards: the facts of how they actually met; how their accidental love started and escalated; what it was like to fall in love with a married man who decided to run for president; the surprise of becoming pregnant during the campaign; how the affair became public; the extensive coverup, and finally, what happened in the years after Edwards publicly admitted to being the father of their daughter, Frances Quinn.

What would have made What Really Happened better?

Less description of uninteresting moronic detail: "I had the Cesar salad and Johnny had a steak."

What was most disappointing about Rielle Hunter’s story?

She has nothing of interest to say. Oh, except when she's trashing her married lover's now dead wife. Nice one.

How could the performance have been better?

    The performance was fine.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    All of the above.

    Any additional comments?

The author proclaims to be new age-y and into karma, honesty, etc. Yes she's having an affair with a married man, gets pregnant by him, lies to everyone, trashes her lover's wife, calls her a 'witch on wheels' and talks about how horrible the wife was and she is dead and cannot defend herself. I think that's lousy.

When Caylee Anthony was reported missing in Orlando, Florida, in July 2008, the public spent the next three years following the investigation and the eventual trial of her mother, Casey Anthony. On July 5, 2011, the case that captured headlines worldwide exploded when, against all odds, defense attorney Jose Baez delivered one of the biggest legal upsets in American history: a not-guilty verdict.

Would you try another book from Peter Golenbock and Jose Baez and/or Jim Frangione?

    No

Would you ever listen to anything by Peter Golenbock and Jose Baez again?

    No

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Jim Frangione?

    The narrator was fine.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

No new information, except that Jose Baez is a bit up himself.

    Any additional comments?

I much preferred the book by the prosecutor.

From her Academy Award-nominated screenplays to her best-selling fiction and essays, Nora Ephron is one of America's most gifted, prolific, and versatile writers. In this classic collection of magazine articles, Ephron does what she does best: embrace American culture with love, cynicism, and unmatched wit. From tracking down the beginnings of the self-help movement to dressing down the fashion world's most powerful publication to capturing a glimpse of a legendary movie in the making, these timeless pieces tap into our enduring obsessions with celebrity, food, romance, clothes, entertainment, and sex.

Would you try another book from Nora Ephron and/or Kathe Mazur?

Yes, I loved Nora Ephron's other books.

What was most disappointing about Nora Ephron’s story?

The stories were all from the 60's and 70's and I found them hard to follow. They were not interesting either. I kept thinking, what is this about?

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

    I guess so.

What character would you cut from Wallflower at the Orgy?

They are stories and overall not very interesting ones.

    Any additional comments?

Overall, maybe 1 or 2 stories were of interest, the others were boring and very unfamiliar, not sure who they are for.

  • The Bling Ring: How a Gang of Fame-Obsessed Teens Ripped Off Hollywood and Shocked the World

Over the course of a year, the members of the now infamous Bling Ring allegedly burglarized some of the biggest names in young Hollywood. Driven by celebrity worship, vanity, and the desire to look and dress like the rich and famous, these seven teenagers made headlines for using Google maps, Facebook, and TMZ to track the comings and goings of their targets. Many of the houses were unlocked. Alarms disabled. A "perfect" crime - celebrities already had so much, why shouldn't the Bling Ring take their share?

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I did not stay interested, my mind wandered while listening to it.

What was most disappointing about Nancy Jo Sales’s story?

It seemed to repeat the same information over and over again.

What didn’t you like about Kathleen Mary Carthy’s performance?

She had the same voice for every character, I could not keep them straight.

What character would you cut from The Bling Ring?

I still can't keep them straight.

    Any additional comments?

This may be a book you need to read instead of listening to, as I found it confusing.
