John Harmon returns from exile expecting to receive an inheritance, but knows that he must marry a stranger, Bella Wilfer, in order to collect. He fakes his own death and takes on a new identity in order to observe her first. Some of the memorable characters in this, the last completed Dickens novel, include Bella who, unlike other Dickens heroines, cannot be accused of unnatural virtue; the insolent barrister Eugene Wrayburn; the amiable Boffin; and the rascal Silas Wegg.

The usual Dickens, which is to say, wonderful.
Some people may object to the fact that the reader is not British but I liked that. I find British accents, although creating a certain authenticity, draw too much attention to themselves and distract me from the meaning. I know many feel the opposite about this but, to each his own. If in doubt, listen to the sample first.

A Bullet for Cinderella is one of John D. MacDonald's earlier works but nonetheless is a brilliant piece of writing. A POW in the Korean War, Tal Howard returns to find himself restless and haunted by the tale told to him by a friend who didn't make it home: a stolen fortune hidden away in the soldier's hometown with the only clue a girl named Cinderella. Tal decides to leave everything behind and go and try and find the money.

Liam. Hometown boy makes good. High school hero becomes NHL star. All of my dreams came true. So why don't I feel happy? I'm on the road a lot, with a new groupie in my bed at a different luxury hotel every night. But all I can think about is my sister's best friend, Maddie. She's the only woman who ever meant something to me. And, God, was she sexy back in the day. I can still feel her wrapped around me.

Deeply in debt and worried that his children will be forced to struggle all their lives to make ends meet, Joe Tower hears stories of free land in Oregon and a better way of life. The tale of the "promised land" does not move his wife Emma to support their leaving all they have behind until a catastrophe gives them no other choice. Intimate and glorious in its description of everyday events, thoughts and hopes, this story is an excellent representation of what like was really like back in frontier days.

Martin Eden, Jack London's semiautobiographical novel about a struggling young writer, is considered by many to be the author's most mature work. Personifying London's own dreams of education and literary fame as a young man in San Francisco, Martin Eden's impassioned but ultimately ineffective battle to overcome his bleak circumstances makes him one of the most memorable and poignant characters Jack London ever created.

I don't know why this is not usually listed up there with THE CALL OF THE WILD as one of London' best works. It's an incredible look into the mind of an artist. Very well read, too.

When Walter Hartright encounters the "solitary figure of a woman, dressed from head to foot in white garments" on a lonely road, he is haunted by her. He falls in love with his employer's niece, Laura, because she resembles the mysterious woman. Laura, however, is betrothed to the evil Sir Percival, who wishes to marry her for her money. The woman in white, it turns out, is Anne Catherick, who was confined in an asylum by the evil Sir Percival because she knew a devastating secret about him.

The book is one of the most influential ethical treatises of all time. Written in 350 BC, it identifies happiness as life's goal. How do we achieve this goal? Not through the satisfactions that come from pleasure, wealth, or fame. According to Aristotle, the true path to happiness lies in contemplation of philosophic truth. This is the only action through which humans can exercise their distinctively unique trait: the ability to reason.
