Vincent Ettrich, a genial philanderer, discovers he has died and come back to life, but he has no idea why, or what the experience was like. Gradually, he discovers he was brought back by his true love, Isabelle, because she is pregnant with their child - a child who, if raised correctly, will play a crucial role in saving the universe.

Would you try another book from Jonathan Carroll and/or Victor Bevine?

    Probably not.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Less esoteric and less absorbed with Victor. Perhaps a parallel plot with other main characters coming back from the dead. The mosaic idea was not very original but had some poesy.

Which character – as performed by Victor Bevine – was your favorite?

    Isabel

Did White Apples inspire you to do anything?

Be less in love with my main characters in my own writing

    Any additional comments?

The narrator was fine. I wasn't that impressed with the book.

  • 11-22-63: A Novel

On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

Kelly says: "I Owe Stephen King An Apology"
    "Great Story, Great Narration."

What made the experience of listening to 11-22-63 the most enjoyable?

King's character development and underlying vision of human beings are probably the most sustaining factors in my enjoying not only this book, but many of his long novels. His characters are believable, his imagination is inspiring, and in this book, his research is fantastic. However, I would probably not have enjoyed this novel as much in an audible form if it weren't for the narrator. What versatility! I was particularly impressed by his rendition of the female lead, Sadie.

What was one of the most memorable moments of 11-22-63?

The opening of the book when Jake Epping is grading essays! As an English prof, I recognized the validity of his observations. I was particularly surprised at the end, when Jake Epping mentions that his best pupil in American Literature shared the same name with me. The past harmonizes!

    Which scene was your favorite?

All of them except for the return to 2011.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. But that's not ever how I do it anyway. I want it to LAST!!!!

    Any additional comments?

Time travel is a well worn concept with many skeptics and detractors. At first I didn't think I would like this novel because of the premise of trying to save JFK. (I thought it would lead to inevitable failure and a flurry of rehashing of political conspiracy theories.) But King tells multiple stories about saving ordinary people that don't just build up but constitute, in some ways, the real story.

Why we think it’s a great listen: How do you one-up a book that’s already a global literary phenomenon? Hire Simon Vance to (flawlessly) interpret the loves, lives, and murders of Sweden’s cold and secret-filled world. A spellbinding amalgam of murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue. It's about the disappearance 40 years ago of Harriet Vanger, a young scion of one of the wealthiest families in Sweden.

Pamela Murphy says: "COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN"
"Well worth the long listen . . ."
    Overall

This was great; I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys complex characterization, surprising plot turns, and in-depth contexts. It is a historical Swedish family saga, with just the right amount of mystery and action. It does treat sexual violence towards women, and yes, it does get a bit graphic at times--but not to the point where you get sick of it. Earlier reviews warned me that it is long; yes, some people cannot hang with it--should be absolutely no problem for regular readers, those with a B.A. and above, or just plain mystery fanatics.

Now, it isn't perfect: it takes a while to get going and there is some predictability and maybe the main character Blomquist is a little too affable, but other than that . . . I just wish I could find more by this author I know so little about.

By the way, this narrator is one of the best I've heard on Books on Tape or Audible, ever.
